i've heard a million stories about 225 and 250 motors. I know we all want to go fast, but does a 225 really get that much better gas mileage?? Preferably in pro XS's and E-tecs is what i want to know info about.... whats ya'lls opinions?
Just wondering what to look for...

Mercury has the best fuel efficiency but they are all fairly close together. The tests made on different boats get slightly different results too.
The reason a boat with a 250 rating will get better MPG with the 250 is that you can use a bigger prop compared to a 225.
I bought my boat for efficiency. Its a 150 on a light weight Allison XB2003. It does get good mileage but..... A slightly larger and heavier XB21 with a 250XS can get slightly better mileage than mine.
I am wrong but you can not prove it, you just believe it enough from the bottom of your heart.....
.......Every post you make I'll be trolling you.

Its all in what you want....if you want a 21' glass boat then your going to need a 250....smaller boat then you can get by with a smaller motor...I don't drive mine to work so I could care less as long as it does what I think it should do...to me its kinda like worrying about the fuel mileage of a top fuel dragster...it don't matter which one you drive none do well...there is alot of truth in the fact that the tank stays closer to full at 3500 rpms then it does at 5800 rpms...

I'm with Big Un. I run a 250 Pro XS and I love the way it runs. I don't have any hard data, run a 250 at 80% or a 225 at 100%, mileage may not be a lot different. I just put more gas in it and go.

I've always figured that if I had to worry about fuel mileage, then I couldn't afford to own a boat.

I've always figured that if I had to worry about fuel mileage, then I couldn't afford to own a boat. +1 I haven't had a 250 or 225 in a bit, but I ran both on a 21ft Triton in college, and I really couldn't tell that much difference. When I was running the 225 I just pushed it that much harder to get me moving as fast as the 250 did. An average trip on Lake Austin (probably 5 miles total) would run me $20. This was about a year ago, so factor in those gas prices.

I would think it all depends on the weight of the boat. A 250 will be more efficient than a 225 on the same hull.

Well ya'll are right about the running at full throttle. If you run any of them wide open its going to drain the gas... but running wide open is just fun though lol

Your mileage is going to be based a lot on how much lead that right foot has in it. I can run my 250 HPDI WOT on a long run and watch the needle move. However, I can run about 4,000 rpm and make a full tank last a real long time. All depends on how hard you drive it.
Most of the manufacturers have a data sheet you can look up that has test data from different boats. It will give you the rpm that got the best and worst mileage. Look it up and see what they say.
