As the title Says my storm door was blown back ripping the closer out of the jamb sill and a good size hunk of wood went with it. Is there anyway to fix this without replacing the whole door jamb. Can I just remove the damaged wood and replace it? Or fill it and sand it somehow? The door frame is structurally sound. I'm just looking to repair the cosmetic damage, I intend to replace the storm door with a top/bottom combination closer system but I don't want to replace the door and frame since it still functions properly.

Is there anyway to fix this without replacing the whole door jamb. Can I just remove the damaged wood and replace it? Without seeing a picture, I'd say yes...You'll have to remove the door jamb from the wood and then remove the brick trim (I think that's what that piece of wood is called)...Then go get another piece at the local lumber yard and cut it to fit...

Get some 3" or 4" screws and use the piece that tore loose. Just put longer screws that will go through the door frame into the trimmers behind it. If you predrill some holes while holding the ripped out chunk in place it should match right back up. You could even use a brown sharpie to help hide the crack, just mark up the stuff where there's no paint before you put the screws in.
That's what I'd try. Might save some time and $$$$.
Good luck widdit.

Also, liquid nails will hold the ripped out chunk in place forever.

So here is my plan so far, fit the ripped out piece back into place with some wood filler and fill in the cracks the same, held by brad nails while it cures. Sand it, paint it and be done with it. I hope it works, what do you guys think?
Also I'm not 100% sure the broken out piece held together all that well. It separated into two pieces and one half of it blew away in the storm. Could I fill the empty place with wood filler and sand it flat?

You can remove the piece that is left on the door and glue it back in place using a good exterior wood glue like. Loctite makes the best in my opinion. Then put in a few brad nails, if you think it might split you can secure it in place with some masking tape. Once it sets up, which should be about two hours depending on the humidity, fill the gaps and holes that are left with Famowood wood filler, it will probably take two or three times if the spots are very big. then it will be ready to sand and paint.
If you use Famowood filler you are going to need some acetone to get it off of your hands, Famowood makes a solvent but it is mainly acetone and it costs about three times as much.

after you get the jamb fixed make sure you use an 2 1/2 to 3 inch woodscrew into the framing to hold the hardware

You can cut out the wood that broke. Replace with new board wood glus on top and bottom should work great.
but
I would pull all of it off and start over that would be the best thing to do.

Screw it in , then Bondo the places with chunks missing. Seriously....automotive bondo works great. I've seen old painters use it.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

I've used it many times...doesn't shrink between applications while filling a large cavity.
