Has there ever been a documented case of a poisonous snake biting a kayaker? If yes, please provide provide a link, as we have all heard stories. I just want the facts not boring advice or stories.

I can't see why a snake would bite a kayaker unless: 1. he was using cut bait or something to attract the snake 2. he had some fish on a stringer dragging them behind the yak and the guy pulls them in with snake attached 3. he was yaking at night and stepped on it getting in and out you hear all sorts of "sea stories"-p-

it seems they prefer kayakers now days to shad, minnows, frogs, birds, crawfish, eggs, toads & fish. i get tired of all these snakes biting & chasing me in my yak all the time. think im gunna sell my kayak & quit fishing all together cause snakes are bad & kill people. besides i would much rather lay on the couch and play video games all weekend and stuff my pie hole. i think this water snake would have a hard time getting in through your scupper holes

I've had snakes, not sure what kind, get near my kayak three times. On each occasion, they appeared to be just sniffing at me wondering what it was. Just whack 'em with a paddle. If I hadn't they might have tried to enter the boat, but I'm not going to find out. If the paddle doesn't work, I'm going to lay down a supressing fire with my .380 and fall back.

Nice Pic!I've witnessed a CottonMouth striking, dragging,(swimming),and eating a small channel cat like that one;I was wading(Yikes)Brushy Creek(Round Rock) for Bass......Scared the bejeezus out of me;I was sight casting to Bass, and all of a sudden, this big #$$ snake comes up from the middle of the creek and nails that cat.....Had a 4 to 6 ft Gator come up next to me in my old Kayak in a Resivior fishing for Crappie....not a good thing.

I know Dean Thomas (Slowride on the TKF.com forum) had a rattlesnake swimming around his 'yak near Matagorda Island a few years ago. And here's a video of Bassmaster Classic champ Alton Jones of Waco with his son Alton Jr. bass fishing when a rattlesnake approaches. http://bassfan.com/tv_play.asp?id=119

I read your thread and you have way more balls than I do. I could never mess with a rattler that small bare handed.
So, a quick follow up question. Are bass immune to rattlesnake venom?
Just seems like eating a rattlesnake would cause the bass to die after ingesting the venom.

I don't know if simply ingesting snake venom would kill a fish. The real question in my mind would be if a rattler could/would deliver a potent strike underwater??? I would think the confines of a basses gullet would pretty much render a snake strike useless. I rigged my live rattler by running the hook, barb and shank up through the bottom of the jaw and out the top of the head. Pit vipers have good skeletal structure in the head, so safe to say a viper is pretty much rendered harmless when rigged in this fashion.
