Rockhopper,

I know you tryed to cover alot on previous entrys .What is the diameter of the floats on the new model?Somewhere in the threads it was mentioned about being able to stand on your boat is this true?How long is it taking you to get these to someone once ordered?Any more demo days soon?

Rockhopper,
Very nice simple design. I will definitely think about buying your product when I decide to replace my current tube. And of course it is nicer that you are local and do all of the "quality control" yourself.

Come to the Fort Worth Fly Fisher's "Summer Spool" event on August 7th to test drive a floatpro. I will be set up down by the pond with a couple of kickboats and some fins. I think somebody might even cook some hotdogs. To check out more info on this event see the post in the fresh water fly fishing section.

Area = Pi x R Squared for a circle = Pi/4 x Dia Squared

Pi/4 = 0.786 so a 12" circle has .786 the flotation of a 12" square. You get 27% more flotation from the square shape, but more drag because of more wetted surface.

Fun facts to know and tell.....

Good informaiton, My day and I have been build similar boats for years, we always use square blocks of foam due to the availability, we also use a full conduit frame that incases the foam , this is for protection, a little heaver duty version of these boats but we use ours primarily on slow moving rivers in Virginia. I love this simple, light weight design , and it is perfect for lakes and ponds , I just don’t know how it would hold up dragging across rocky river bottoms and slamming into the occasional rock.

I you want to calculate the displacement of a 12 in tube for a catamaran, go like this. So I can do it in my head I take 75% of the square section, this is within a percent or two. If a midway displacement was acceptable I would take the displacement of one float. Meaning the perfect section for surface area drag would be floating immersed to 3 o'clock 9 o'clock. Since there are two floats, it is the same as calculating the displacement of one whole float.

So in this case, you have 1x1x4 feet, or four cubic feet. times 75%, that is 3 cubic feet. One cubic foot displacement in fresh water is 62.4 pounds, so call it 60. That is 180 pounds. 360 if you displace (sink)the whole two pontoons. This is why the kickboats are 8 feet and 16 inches wide. And if you want only a 4 inch waterline as is normal with stuff like canoes, then you need more displacement still, if you want lengthwise curvature for easy paddling, more still. With a real boat shape the haircut is nearer 56%, than 75%.

BTW, how do you go about getting one registered for a trolling motor since they are "home" built so to speak? Of course I'd need one with your longer pontoons.

Register it as a homemade boat. That is how I did my water wagon for 20+ years. Never had a problem

Thanks to those who braved the heat and came to Summer Spool last weekend. Pretty cool event put on by Russell and the Fort Worth Fly Fishers club....well it was actually really hot but you know what I mean. Thanks also to TPWD for allowing us to use their facility. Enjoyed hanging out with those guys for a few hours. Maybe it will become an annual thing.
