Going camping to the SP. My son has shown a lot of interest in fishing. I am a noobie myself. We have been out a few time to local ponds in Houston catching mainly bluegill. His face is something to look at when he catches one.
Any tips on what to catch at Raven? Where? I know it is a bass hotspot but I would prefer to catch something we can take and eat and bass is C&R only. How is it for catfish or crappie? What would you suggest for catching them?
Give a man a fish, he will eat it and go back to work. Teach a man to fish and he will fish all day.

Buy some live minnows and fish under a cork near any structure that is reachable by shore for crappie. Fish the bottom with Sure Shot punch bait or chicken liver for catfish. When fishing for either crappie for catfish if you are not getting hits withing 10/15 minutes, pick up and move.. Repeat process until you find them.

I've had a ton of luck in the past catching crappie off the pier with live minnows. Just drop the line right off the pier, you don't even have to cast it.

Oh, and another thing. If you catch some small bream, put them on a hook and throw them off the pier real far and you'll get a nice cat or two.

one weekend on a sunday night about seven years ago, during mid spring early summer. A father and his son were night fishin in a canoe out of no-where the boy was plucked from the back of the canoe. the boy was not found till they were able to capture the gator. they found part of his torso and much of his legs. they identified him by his brand new air jordans. this is not something that the park wants one to know. proceed with caution when you navigate those waters. the killer is gone. she was a wopping 13 feet.

I call big time BS on that one, if you're claiming it happened at HSP, or anywhere in TX for that matter. Texas has ZERO, repeat, ZERO documented alligator attack fatalities.
I've also never heard of a person anywhere in the world being plucked from a watercraft by a gator/croc.

I've had a gator hiss at me while fishing on the pier, but I've never even heard of a fatality
