On Joe Pool today I noticed 2 men and a dog in a boat. The interesting thing was the dog had on a floatation vest and the men didnt.

Thanks everyone for the great advice! My only hesitation for getting a new puppy at this time is, that when I do, I have to get a kitten for my nine year old daughter!
I am not really a cat person, but I love my daughter more than anything in the world, and she is a great kid and I promised her a cat.
For those of us who have had to put a pet down, I myself believe that it is one of the hardest jobs God gives us to do.

I have 3 shorthaired and they have all gone with me one at a time, and have been great. Just lay under my console most the time or sleep on the back deck. And my 2 females smooth swimmers not so much with my male. I think the key is to any dog is start taking them whem their young, and my dogs mind very well too.

I take my border collie when I go fishing, he watches my lure the whole time and likes to lay on the front deck while we're flying across the lake.

My buddy has a chiuana (sp) who goes with us from time to time. She is great in the boat. He has a life jacket for her.
Does anyone else use a doggie life jacket for the dog?

Get a a white dog...., yea, mine is a lab, 1 year old now and over 125 lbs....picked him as a puppy with a white coat so he could survive summer heat in the back of the sunlit boat...

A white schnauzer would be cool. Ya know, cooler in the summer and small enough to lay under the console and easy to retrieve after a dip. I have a S/P one now and he loves going on the boat. He rides in my lap when on plane. Don't know why cause he sticks his head out the window of my truck when going down the highway at 70 but he doesn't like it on the boat. He hides his face under my arm. He doesn't take up much room though and as said before, he has the bladder of a champ.

I have been fishing with some great dogs but the best dog we had was a Jack Rat terrier. He was the smartest dog on the water. If he got hot he just jumped in and swam around the boat until he was ready to get back in. Heck, if he had to take a leak he would jump in (with his jacket on), lift his leg and paddle in a circle and piss in the water, wildest thing I ever saw. The coyotes got him last October....Really miss that guy!

Another vote for the Heeler or Aussie.
Hands down the most impressively intellegent dogs out there. You can teach them to do almost any task.
They are great dogs that live a long time and are extremely loyal.
