Several months ago I had to put my last Dalmatian down (15yrs old). Now, I would like to get a dog that I can take in the boat with me when I go fishing. Besides a Lab, anyone recommend a breed of dog that would be good fishing companion? ![fish fish](/forums/images/graemlins/default/fish.gif) Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

any dog that stays in the boat and out of the way...I guess. My English Bulldog can't stand the heat and sinks like a rock.....he is not a boating companion candidate!

Australian Shepherds are GREAT boat dogs, as are Blue Healers. I have a pure breed Aussie female and a Texas Healer (Aussie Blue Healer mix), they are awesome on the boat. My dogs are black, brown, and white so with those colors and the Texas heat I dont take em during the hottest 2 months of the year, but the other 10 they are right by my side. Never had either of them jump in the water, though both have fallen in the water a couple of times by accident but thats a couple of times out of 100 fishing trips.

You can of take any breed of dog with you if you leash train it and teach it commands. Sit, stay, heel, etc. We had a super hyper Jack Russel that was a great boat dog. She stayed calm and obeyed commands on the boat and never got a hook in her or jumped out of the boat without commands.

If you want like a true water dog that is smart that isn't a lab check out a standard poodle... no lie dude one of the smartest dogs there is and a water proof coat... on the down side you may have 2 face some ridicule from other guys lol... Otter hounds are cool but hard to find. Any dog will be fine just about if you get it used to going on the boat early, probably have to kind of potty train it to not go on the boat... If you ever want a good dog training book check out cezar milan's book (the dog wisperer) or an older one that I don't know who it is by called "No Bad Dogs"

I had to do the same thing 2 1/2 months ago. Found a pup on craigs list. I think she is Part Britany and part Pointer. But so far at 5 months old she has made 4 trips without a hitch. She's got some big paws to fill cause ole Lucky was the smartest and best dog I have ever seen on a boat. Patience and stern love can teach all dogs to be what we want. Good luck

Until Mrs Bass Border works enough OT for the new Bass Rig, I could take the place of the dog. I'll just set in the back seat and all you will hear out of me is an occasional "GET THE NET". Also, I'll chip in for gas.

I am a heeler fan. I had one that would open my livewell lid when I caught fish. She was a special dog.I had and older boat that we kept at the lake. The livewell was under the drivers seat. She would flip it up when I caught a fish.
