The only way i would kayak again is to put in around Youngsport and ride it down with a truck at gravel crossing to get out with. Would be about a 5 mile trip, roughly. And theres really no good place to put in up there. I'll take 40 any day Dhenry! Sounds like a good trip. Hope this storm doesnt drop to much rain as i was planning on heading there Friday morning.

So youngsport and float it down to the rapids would be the best bet then. Trent let me know if you plan on kayaking down soon I will go for sure.

Well if you have a kayak only, yes because paddling up would be impossible. There is a fence that is torn down at the Youngsport bridge on the South side, so I imagine it is tresspassing but there are a lot of tracks there so I know i'm not the only one who has done it. You also have to carry your yak down so be careful. Be sure you wear a life vest too as there are some rapids that can be tricky if you dont know how to work them. Dont go alone! I was lucky to make it back the other day! I may go next week, but im still a little cold from that trip. I'll let you know.

Fished from Youngsport to gravel crossing out of my kayak last week, caught 17 but it was cool out.

Yes, the fish are up to Youngsport.

But be very careful, yes you can get under the bridge on the east/south side but technically if you move away from the bridge right-of-way you are trespassing. The land deeds on the Lampasas River go to the center of the river channel so unless your in a boat you are trespassing.

Don't even try to go under the bridge on the west side (where the fields are), because you have to trespass to get to the bridge, and the owner knows the game wardens well.

Not trying to be a party pooper, just don't want anyone to get in trouble.

I live by the river but didn't check it before I left for work this morning, but my friend did and he said its rollin' and muddy today. We didn't get much rain there but Evant/Lampasas area got hammered and thats where the river comes from.

Sometimes the river can go on a rise and we haven't even had a drop of rain here. It's what happens upstream.

Bill

Ok thanks for the advice guys. My buddy likes to bank fish so I might have him drop me off at youngsport and float it down. I was looking on google earth and it looked like there was some more rapids downstream from gravel crossing. Is there some there?

You may need to read a little closer then, under "what is it legal to do in a public lake/stream", it plainly states a person MAY NOT cross private property to gain access to public water.

As I stated before, on the west side of the Lampasas at Youngsport the ONLY way to get to the river is through private land, the bridge goes around dry land (not streambed) for about 200 yds before you hit the river bed. This is the landowner I was speaking of. Your welcome to come try it though and see how the game warden feels about it, I wouldn't give you very good odds on success though.

As to the east side of the bridge, a person should be ok as long as they go down directly under the bridge. Problem is, the only way to navigate much of the area on that side is to walk up out of the streambed and then back down. When you walk up out of the streambed you ARE trespassing, doesn't matter if your just trying to get back to the public streambed.

As you can see this is a somewhat unique situation which I'm sure you didn't know about since your 100 miles away. The ones around here know what I was talking about in the first post.

BTW I personally have no problem with folks getting down to the river there, I'm glad there is somewhere they can. The landowners there, which yes I do know, wouldn't mind either if trash hadn't been left all over down there before. I understand not everyone does that, but it only takes a few bad apples to put a bad taste in their mouths and mess it up for everyone else.

Bill

You should do pretty good aj. The first rapid right downstream from the 2484 bridge, its the one you can see from the bridge, is not bad. Watch for concrete and rebar right there though as that was the old river crossing many years ago. The second rapid right below it can be a little hairy though, a bit of a drop off there. If you have experience kayaking you should have no problem though.

Start fishing as soon as you get your boat in, the whites should be there.

Good luck!

Bill

Thanks for the info Bill. I think i'll wait till it clears up and slows down a little, maybe next week to make the float. There are no rapids below gravel crossing. Most of the boats fishing in the area came from long bridge, and there are some big boats. Will let you know when i go if you want to meet up.

Thinking about heading there in the morning, is it still jacked up?

Went two weeks ago and caught 3 from the bank, I was only fishing 5 minutes. I thought it was going to be a good day the next 4 hours I caught nothing.

didn't look too bad from the 195 bridge, actually looked like it was clearing up somewhat
