Okay, guys, that is enough. Just when I think I have made up my mind, I get a different point of view that affects my thinking...again. lol. I will say that I have been trying to get someone from Lowrance on the phone all morning and all I get is a busy signal. I called Humminbird and someone picked up right away. I would hate to be the guy needing service on a $2k unit and all I could get is a busy signal. Makes me feel more comfy with the Humminbird. At least on the product support issue.

I really like my units and don't regret for a minute getting Lowrance. But I'm sure I would be perfectly happy with a comparable HB. That really sums it up!!!! I too am very happy with my Lowrance but could be happy with the HB as well. Lot's of talk about which has better picture clarity, etc., etc. but that's all subjective. I won't brag up Lowrance, put down HB or vice/versa. I've seen both in action and both are great units and certainly miles advanced from the "green box" I started with. I have prefered Lowrance for 35+ years and have had few problems with them. The problems I had, which were few, were solved quickly and cleanly but I have heard of horror stories about both products sooooo ........... pick what you want. Truth be known: Most problems with any other electronic/computer devices (which HB & Lowrance both are)is people do know know how to properly set them up, don't know how to properly use it, don't know how to properly adjust it, and they don't read the manuals, or don't "update" their units, etc., etc. It ain't rocket science ........... but sometimes seems like it.

Still from what I've seen HB's 2D is inferior to Lowrance. But it sounds like once you get SI, 2D is hardly used. Would the SI folks agree?
Doug, thats a great image. I'd have to see more of those to make the jump to HB. The Lowrance SI images I've seen are like that and overall more detailed IMHO. But, is it $600 better?
Anyone use Lowrance 2D with HB SI? Any interferance? I disagree on several accounts here. With DI or DS you need to be moving 3 to 6mph to get a clear picture. With 2D sonar you don't. You also need the 2D sonar for vertical fishing. Very difficult to use DI or DS for vertical fishing to see your spoon. The foot print of DI and DS is narrow while 2D sonar is a cone. DI and DS is almost useless if your a shallow water guy. You will mostly (not always) use DS and DI for deeper water applications. In regaurds to sonar quality of the Humminbird. Here are some comparisons where I put the image of the DI on top of the 2D sonar. I don't see how you can get any better than this... What is the best settings to get this for the 1197 HB? I just bought one and would like mine to do this.

Stripaholic. The 1197Si did those images. You can get those images on any SI unit by Humminbird. Your only limited by screen size.. Here is a screenshot from my 798 on the trolling motor. It is on Texoma. If you look at the top left image you can see a tree laying down with the branches over a boulder. The trunk is on the left and branches on the right. I'm not sure who sunk this brushpile but I know about it now.

Great picture fro0m the trolling motor. I have mine on the trolling motor and if I slow the chart speed down to about 2 I get a lot of detail. I haven't used 2D since I put it on the trolling motor.

question, if sitting still with the down imaging on the trolling motor directly above a brushpile, what does that brushpile look like?

With the chart speed on 2 out of 10 it is impressive. Of course it is rare you can be perfectly still but by using the trolling motor you can get real close. I am going to learn to take screenshots someday but I am more interesting in fishing really. Come get on my boat and I will show you.

I though I would share too! Brushpile with fish around it. Brushpile with fish around it. Christmas tree we dropped a while back. Another BP with fish around it. Another BP. Another bp with fish around it. You can even see the fish next to it.. a Crappie! We caught some here! An old building slab I found in the lake. I know i need to tune my DI a bit more, right now everything is at default settings.
