I fly fish fast water below Texoma when they are generating. I use a stern anchoring system made by Scotty. It is a trolly system that allows you to raise and lower your anchor while seated. I use 5 to 8 lb. rubber coated dumbell weights from WalMart. They are cheaper than normal anchors. This system allows you to anchor above a good hole or spot and work the area. Be careful. The the anchor will tend to pull your stern down. Too heavy of current might swamp your yak. I also use a garden hose anchor to drift fish. Take a 3 to 5 ft. section of garden hose and fill it with lead weights. Cast net weights work very well. Drag it behind you for a controlled drift. The hose tends to slide over most snags.

I use the same system....probably because Scott showed it to me.....BUT...I have got my anchor stuck before (Thankfully in fairly shallow slow water) and it can be dangerous....With this system you can't just let go of the anchor rope and get free. The system is designed to grab the rope when you let go of it....And in my U-12 I couldn't reach around far enough to cut it loose. Great system and I still use it. Just be aware of the limitations.

Also, I use an old window sash wt (which is essentially an iron bar) for an anchor now. It snags less than the dumbbells.

Budd is right. I got my anchor stuck in deep heavy current and was trapped. My buddy in another yak was able to release the rope for me. I tried to develop a weak link system using zip ties between the anchor and rope. I gave up after losing and anchor that was not stuck very bad. You might be able to use a stick or rod tip to defeat the cam that locks the rope.

I don't think the current or flow was so much of an issue as simply not knowing how to fish those conditions. Where's Yakin Yota when you need him !
