IMHO Has anyone of you guys ever heard of Marinade. The gasperGoo flesh is somewhat coarse so try marinating your fillets to add flavor and as far as the smell.... all fish smell. It comes with the Territory.Beer and lemon juice is a good Marinade .The alcohol in the beer helps break down the flesh while the Citrus acid in the Lemon juice improves the taste. After you give him a swim in that for 10 to 20 minutes then add your seasonings and coating mix fry him up .He`ll do you proud. I garrr onn teee!!!!!!!

Does any of ya'll out there eat freshwater drum? If so, what are some good recipes? I catch a ton of these things in Navarro Mills Lake. I eat black drum I catch in the gulf and they are great tasting. It just never occures to me to eat a freshwater one....well until now that is. I see no reason why they wouldn't taste good too. What do ya'll think? The best recipe I ever heard was to place the filets on a 1/2" maple board and cook slowly over a semi hot bbq pit. Cook for about 2 1/2 hours verrrrryyyyyy slowwwwwlllyyyy......... Then take the drum off the maple board, throw it away, and eat the board..... Drum are like Carp.....Maybe some folks eat em, but not me.......

I know everyone's taste buds are different but man there is no way gaspergou are in the same class as catfish and crappie or white bass for that matter. Very greasy fish, not good at all. Of course this is all a matter of opinion but there is a reason they are not considered a game fish.

Maybe their diet on a particular body of water has something to do with the gaspergou that some of you have experienced. I have only had them from Choke Canyon. I fried them up and they were excellent... very similar in smell, taste, and texture to their salt water kin.

When discussing the taste of individuals in almost ANYTHING...you are going to find a wide gulf in likes and dislikes.
As evidenced by this post, the various qualities of freshwater drum have been described as "fatty", "sweet", "unpleasant", "great"....etc. etc.
Many posters are just like you....they want confirmation on some idea or process before they continue any experimentation.
There comes a time, however, that one must show initiative and prove for themself the answer to a question.
It is time for just such an action from you. Let us know YOUR thoughts.
Peace

I was just curious about what people had to say about the subject. Your answer is true about everything. For example, I absolutely love venison, yet I know people that wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Heck I know people that do back flips for carp fillets. I, personally, don't have the guts or the desire to try them. To me freshwater drum are a lot of fun to catch. Put up a great fight. One day I was just wondering if people really ate them. In this thread, I see they are eaten quite frequently. I don't feel the need for confirmation or validation to try goos. It was just a randum thought. The guys and gals on this thread are very knowledgable, for the most part, about fishing and hunting for that matter, and thought it would be interesting what the members thought about the lowly Freshwater Drum.
