Looks good. I have crappie jig heads, but aren't they too heavy for a fly rod? I do have fly jig heads, thought I might try those instead.

Just try using a bead head....OR....bead chain eyes to keep the hoop riding point up.....just keep it sparse.

Nope, you just have to get the 'chuck and duck' cast down pat. Many times I've used jigs with great success on a fly rod, especially before I started tying. I have also managed to slam myself in the back of the head with a very fast-moving jig. I recommend you don't do that smile

Yes, I am a bit concerned about that, or whacking the jig against the rod, possibly causing a crack. I may just tie one on my fly sized jig that I would use for a cap spider.

That might be too small a hook. I think the cap spider jig heads I've used are #12 or smaller.

Why not take a 1/32 or 1/16 jig head and just remove some excess weight???

you can take the cheap crappie jigs from walmart in the 1/32 and 1/64 size and take a pair of snips or wire cutters and cut off the lead from the hook; not all of it; just cut under, over, and the sides til you get it the size you want. A 1/80 size is about right to cast. After cutting, you can touch up the rough places with a file, then cover the lead with fingernail polish and they'l look like theyre out of a package; cheep too!-p-

That is an idea. I know I have 1/32 size...the only 1/64 size I have are all painted already. (making some crappie jigs with them.) Your idea just may work, although it seems like trouble. Too bad there isn't any for sale like what we need for this fly, if so I would just buy some.

Yes indeed, smaller jig heads are more practical all things considered.

Barlow's and a few other online stores sell these tiny jig heads.

As far as big old jigs go, the word is Belgian Cast. Learn it your tandem rig/fat fly/jig head concerns will dwindle like the evening sun on a Hawaiian beach.

I know it will work because I've been doing it for a few years. Its no more trouble than tying a fly.-p-

I have jig heads that David made a long time ago. I do not recall how small they are, but they are very small. Maybe 1/125? I will have to think this over. Choices choices choices...lol.
