I just use the same rig I use for pretty much everything else. 6-7 ft spinning rod, 8 lb test, sliding sinker that stops at a swivel about 18 in from the hook. 6 lb test from swivel to hook. Set the drag at about 4 lbs and use one of those rod holders that look like a coil spring on one end and stand the rod straight up.........Your alarm is the drag. That's exactly how I set up for cats, reds, etc. Doing all the reading here, I tried merging the Euro with the Amarican and it hasn't been working. Since that ain't working for me, gonna go back to using the old ways. I think I'll keep playing around with the hair rig and boilies though, they just seem like they should work well with the American system.
FISH ON!!! ummmmm off

Inept, I use hair rigs and boilies (as well as maize, chickpeas, and more) on 'american' rod setups and I catch more on them then on my 'euro' gear; not saying they're better, but just relaying my experience. I've been next to others with their euro gear, though, and often get schooled, so it is more my level of comfort than any 'real' (dis)advantage. I can certainly cast out farther with my euro gear than my 'american' gear.
As for the original query: I would consider bass or catfish gear as non-euro, such as spinning or baitcaster on a 6 - 8 foot rod, some kind of rod rest (but no electronics), either fixed-sinker or running sinker rig, or free-lined. One or more single or treble hooks with the bait directly on the hook. Doughbait, bread, or some natural bait (nightcrawlers, insects, etc) or an artificial lure (beetle, plug, etc).
And of course, sweetcorn! I put that directly on a hook. I like float fishing this way; small or pencil float with a #8 or #10 hook and a single or two grains of corn. Throw out a can of sweetcorn to draw them in and wait!

barge & bank fishing, ugly stix, abu garcia baitcasters, very basic paylaker rigs, doughbait, sweetcorn, and peas. ahhh memories... things were much simpler back then... i still have all that setup, i just rarely ever use it.

Heck I'm still a hybrid Euro-American carper.
I usually have two "Euro" setups out, albeit one of them is a 7 ft bass spinning rod.
Then I usually freeline bread with my old bass setup (7ft baitcasting).
I do want two more long rods though, sometimes freelining is just not as viable, due to distance or wanting to socialize instead of stare at your line.

why would they throw you off.steve, curt and i have always done it this way.everyone on here has also and never got tossed.but your right its very fun.but i still like my euro gear better.like i was told by some old veterans(scott, chad)that i wont catch as many fish but better quality The lady didn't like me much when I was younger, and she really didn't like fishermen at all and this was before they moved the barge. I haven't been out there since they moved it. And it was a tricky cast back then lemme tell ya. And I guess she also didn't like me getting that big old Canadian goose to sit on the walkway next to me while I fed him corn. He would honk and hiss at people walking by.

My first big carp was caught while crappie fishing. My bait was a MINNOW! Cannibals!
Yesterday I used a bank stick and bite alarms with non euro style rods, sometimes site casting at koi
no luck, but missed one and caught two turtles. I did throw a range cube at a turtle that surfaced and I bounced it off it's shell. That was pretty American of me! LOL
PB Common Carp....... 38 lbs PB Mirror Carp........12 lbs 8 oz PB SM Buffalo........ 53 lbs PB Grasser........... 48 lbs 4 oz PB Blue cat.......... 17 lbs (caught on maize)
