Based on my recent tournament experience at Rayburn, virtually every fish in that place has been caught and their jaw rendered completely dysfunctional by unknowing anglers during practice!
This is a good post and an important one. However, I'm not planning on being too dainty with an 8 pounder during a tournament and risk dropping him back in the lake!

i think what most people dont get is that it might not break their jaw but that it injures its jaw. the fish might swim off and look perfectly fine but will later die due to the injured jaw.

I am always trying to learn new things about how to better take care of fish! When I learn something new, that I think is valuable, I like to share it with other bass fisherman.
I have caught many fish at or over the 8 lber mark. I always made sure to get them quickly back into the water after a quick picture, and I though that was enough. I thought I was doing the right thing.
However, this weekend I saw a poster at Anglers Lodge in Amistad about how holdind a big bass a certain way almost always breaks its jaw bone! I was horrified when I learned that the way I always hold big bass usually injurs the fish in such a bad way.
The poster said that you should never hold a bass verticly by the lip. The weight of a big fish aand the pressure are hands place on the jaw cause it to snap almost everytime
I quickly ran through my phone cam a realized that I have broken about 10 jaws this past year. I was very upset about this. However, if I can teach at least one person the right way, it will make me feel better.
The propoer way to hold thes big fish is with 2 wet hands. One supporting head region and the other near the tail.
Next time you pose witha big one, remember this. And spread the word! Interesting I have only caught a 5# LMB as my biggest. It was in a net but for the picture I lipped it. On walleye and other fish I slide my hand under the gill plate, would that be better? Someone should tell the Tournament guys.

Holding it up may be bad, but cant be as bad as those who only hold the lip and try to hold fish out horizontally (Bill Dance).
With that said, you cant land a fish that holding it the proper way. Why hasnt BASS rethought the use of nets? I understand nets remove coating, but also though there were things added to livewells to protect them.
I have never caught anything with a broken jaw, but plenty with torn lips or gaping holes

What's worse, lip locking the fish, or dropping herin the parking lot when she flops? A 4 foot drop onto gravel has got to be bad on a 13+.

Sounds like I need to invent a hand scale that cradles fish vs suspend them from the jaw...Money Maker??

I recall the story about the fish named Dottie from cali, it was caught the 1st time and pics showed a lip held fish, it was 21 something i believe. the same guys later caught her at 25 something lbs and again was lip held and released. It was a long while before she finally died of old age, but not of a broken jaw. I can see where everyone should be careful and treat the fish the best they can, but i would say the percentages are low to break a jaw just by a lip hold unless they are being manhandled. Better safe than sorry though.

This is a very interesting topic. personally, I hold all but my biggest bass by the lip. However, I am quite careful. its hard to tell by the pics but I don't even put my thumb in their mouth, I lay it parallel across the lip. By doing this I feel the bass' jaw is not being warped. The fish hangs perfectly vertical in a natural (for the jaw) position. That said, I have personally SEEN a jaw break. It was on about a 6 lber and the guy was SO EXCITED to have caught the fish! He had a death grip on that jaw and rotated it too far... SNAP! Fish couldn't close her mouth, dead for sure. The vertical hold that breaks jaws is when someone rotates the jaw bone in an effort to hold a fish horizontally, thus tweaking the jaw bone and destroying the joint or bone itself.

probly the reason most people never see or catch one with a broken jaw is because the ones with injured jaws cant feed properly and dont get caught again. and im sure you cant really tell a bass's jaw is injured but the fish eventually dies. again it's not breaking the jaws it's injuring it.

You mean like they do on the stage at the Elite Tournaments?

I'm not even going to touch that one! However, if you click on that last link that was posted, there is a photo in there that shows EXACTLY what type of handling will hurt a bass.

First let me state that I am all about proper care for the basses. I love the little critters.
I had the privilege of being at Val's when Mark Stevenson brought in Ethel to the scales. She weighed 17.67 and was the state record for years until Barry caught the 18.18.
I cannot find the pic of Mark holding Ethel with her entire body weight being supported by her lower lip but I will bet that at least 50 people held her up for pics while Mark went back out fishing the rest of the afternoon.
This pic was famous. He was sitting on the edge of the minnow vat wearing a Bomber bait jacket. I remember it like it was last week. (you don't forget seeing a state record bass in person)
Ethel did finally die AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 20 in the aquarium at bass Pro in Springfield but not from being held by her lower lip.
I would never intentionally hurt one of God's creatures unless I was going to have it for supper but some of you guys really worry way too much about this lip holding thing!
