Its an effluent Lake! They can give all the water quality reports they want, but the only time I was on it was for a boat test. The spray of the water smelled just like every sewer farm I have ever been around. No thanks on the fishing,Go to Ft.Phantom. Just my humble opinion, It`s right, but still just my humble opinion!

I've tried it twice from the bank without much luck. However, I have seen a few positive reports from Kirby Lake. I plan to keep fishing there as it is only 5 minutes from my house, but I would like to focus more of my attention on Phantom.

i've seen folks catch alot there. if i were to fish it, it'd be the creek on the south end. it's only a few minutes from my house too, but i'll go to Phantom 99% of the time.

With the last core samples taken from Phantom its a wonder anyone ventures near that lake. The City opted out of dredging the lake due to the high amount of "toxic",the projected funding for clean up wouldn't cover 1/16th the cost of actual clean up to "ONLY HALF" of the projected goal. LOL! Yeah I know Abilene(politics) as well as most every fishin hole worthy of the time within 50 miles. Ive lived "on" Phantom for nearly 47 years if that tells you anything.(?) jest my $.0 T/ The quality of fish from Kirby is well above anything the North Mudhole can produce. Most of my boat trips also have spray with a petro smell, cause its coming from the boat making the spray LOL! Please dont try to smack a quality fishing hole such as Kirby, current lake records clearly prove the restocking efforts have paid off.The small lake is a West Texas legend for producing monster yellow cats and barndoor slabs. Early spring when the slabs are running is decent at night along the banks @ the 707 bridge. The other 90% of the season its pert'near worthless, even the carp dont run in that slough. LOL! You should invest the time to learn Kirby, its a sweet hole, tuff as any at times but thats fishing. T/ i've seen folks catch alot there. if i were to fish it, it'd be the creek on the south end. it's only a few minutes from my house too, but i'll go to Phantom 99% of the time.

Eat a crappie out of Kirby compared to Phantom is night and day.Kirby fish are much cleaner. Everything I catch on Phantom has been catch and release for the last ten years+. I wont eat those muddy pond tasting critters.
Last batch we fried up made the grease pot smell just like the lake, shouldn't be like that with a fish like crappie. Reminds me of the stuff caught on Lake Worth several years back.
"STANKY"!
