You will notice that fish hit the front hook more thus eating the whole crank verse the rear hook. This has been my experience with them too... it works for me, but hey everyone else is different...

Whatever color a bass sees as red (representing blood) is the same color to the bass regardless of the depth..E.G. The color of a red hook at 20ft is the same color(shade) as blood on a injured shad at 20ft.. Finally, someone else understands! From diving, blood does have a distinct color whether you are at 10ft or 110 ft. I have seen blood at both and yes there is a difference, but there is a distinct color to it. At about 20 ish ft, blood actually looks green. So shouldn't we be using green hooks? But green at 20ft might look black.. if blood(red) looks green at 20ft..that would atract a bass because then green is the blood color to the bass..right?

Heres my 2 cents worth about Red hooks.Everyone is saying that red is the first color that dissapears under water,so they use them only in shallow water. However I was fishing a LFM Thursday team tournament and throwing a carolina rigged watermelon red fluke with a red hook in 27 to 33ft of water and doing good with it.My partner was fishing the same setup with a black chrome hook, and not catching at All.If you remeber the old color selector from the late 70s,and drop it down to 27 feet it says red is the color.I learned this from a sucessful Texoma tournament fisherman.

I have done almost scientific studies on hook colors. The red hook is by far a huge advantage in my opinion. Nice to have a scientist on board! Welcome

I will agree on the sharpness issue, and if you catch alot of fish on them they turn gold because the red annidize wares off.I have good results with them on spoons fishin deep.

I learned a lesson on Amistad regarding Red Hooks. I was fishing with Stephen Mills for several days... we were primarily shallow cranking, etc... The bite was tough and they were not commited to cranks, but they would slap it continuously. Drove me nuts. He tied on several cranks through the day in which he changed the front hook to red and proceeded to out fish me with solid hook ups... I'm a believer in certain cases.
If I'm getting a crank bite, but not totally commiting... I'll switch to the colored hook.
