funny you said that, i tied a small hook near the cork with a surgeons knot and it work when they keep hitting the bobber.... but if they are hitting the bobber put the jig 2 inches under the cork..... that will fix that problem. or tie on a small topwater, thats fun!!! i have been guiding for sandies during the annual rn for 8 years now, and thats the rig i usually start with and usually finish with.... works for crappie as well. take the cork off and free line the fluke with a small small hook with 4 lb line, fluorocarbon, and you will tear the large mouth up with it during the spawn.....

That is the truth right there. Anything that flashs and is the size of the bait fish.

Last year we had better luck with live bait. (free-lined glass minnows) Two years ago, I used #4 or #6 chartruse and white clouser flies, and killed em. Previous to that, white 1/16 oz road runners with Mr twister grub curly tails.

Shut up and fish!

What ever kind of lure you choose you need to buy them now or you may have a hard time finding them at the local stores when they start runnin good. Several people have mentioned some good lures and I have stocked up on them and have enough to last a year or two.

I'm like you Matt, I have enough of my favorites to last me for the next 3 years! Couple year's back Sport's Authority put all of their roadrunners on clearance. They were selling whole cards (10 lures) for 2 dollars. I went to every Sports Authority I could find here in Houston and bought all that they had left. I sold about half my stash to Jane Gallenbach at River Ridge and kept the rest for myself. I still buy a few 1/16th oz ones every year, but no 1/8th or 1/4.

Hello

I would like to know how do you fish for crappie with rooster tail, do you fish it like you do a jig / or is it a spinner bait throw and retrive bait?

Same for the Husky jerk, Is it a throw and retrive type bait?

Live minnows under cork dominates. Especially id you are scouting early to find em. Or casting in heavy brush. Also you can work a hole and start a feeding frenzy and keep em goin til you limit.

In the middle of the run when they are thick it does not matter. A rusty hook with a cigarette butt will work.

Rooster Tails or Rooster Tail knockoffs! 1/6th oz on UL gear! End of discussion.

It's tiny and doesn't cast as far as a jig but its action is great and it sinks so you can get it down in the holes, out fished everything this morning. Caught a limit in an hour this morning, all males.

I like the tiny flukes made by Lunker City because they make them in white. My jig head choice depends on the depth of the water. I like to throw cheap baits because you will lose quite a few of them when fishing the run.

wow 3 yr old thread. i use a bobby garland jig or lft jig for crappie. roostertails are great for the sandbass run. just cast and retrieve. very easy to use. now husky jerk takes a lil more practice. toss out and twitch it back. it can be deadly and the fish hammer it. usually big females.

I don't always catch fish, but when I do, I prefer Dos Hybrids
