Where is the Bass Fishing/Tournament Industry Headed?

You know, this whole issue of boat companies going belly up started with the Motor companies buying the boat companies. Some have been successful, some not. Now one has to wonder where one of the two major tournament organizations is headed. Just a prediction, but I think FLW is headed toward Bankruptcy also. Without a Boat company as the premium sponsor how can FLW compete? I hate to see that, because it puts ESPN in the driver's seat, and I think they have done absolutely nothing for the sport. That said, without the competition between the two, (FLW and BASS) the strongest will survive, and I'm not sure that either is all that solvent today. Maybe its time for the powers that be (Boat MFGs, Tackle Companies, and Tournament Trails) to sit down, Pow-Wow, and decide where the sport is headed and what they can do to help.
Right now, we all know it is getting way too expensive to try to keep up with the Jones', so is the answer that less is more? Don't Know.

Maybe FLW should restructure and dump Charlie Evans while they are at it wink

I'm not sure he is the problem, but if thats what it takes to survive, then so be it. In reading some of the stuff about the team sponsorships, it sure does appear that FLW has forgot about the anglers who supported them when the war was on.

Can you please explain this. I only know of one motor company that owns a boat manufacturing plant. They are doing quite nicely.

Maybe a little history lesson is in order.

Back before Ranger was bought by Jacobs, the original suitor was OMC. The deal did not get done, because OMC was not willing to guarantee that they would not move Ranger from Flippin. So, Evinrude bought Javelin...Now Belly UP, and later, Stratos. Genmar later ended up with Stratos and Champion through the Bankruptcy courts, as Bombardier bought OMC out of Bankruptcy. Right around the same time frame, Yamaha bought a Coleman (You know, the camping company) company, Called Skeeter. Next If I'm not mistaken, Mercury bought Pro-Craft and Hydrosports (HydraSports ended up in the Genmar Fold, but it became a saltwater boat.) For Years, Earl Bentz (Later Founder of Triton)had been the performance VP for HydraSports, and when Merc bought them, he left and formed Stratos, then later sold it to OMC). Pretty much, as I remember, Champion was just about the only company that went belly up on its own, without help from anyone, but even then, when Genmar bought Champion, they moved it from Northern Arknasas to Tenn.
If anyone wants to make some corrections to my memory, please do so.

I like having the competitions on TV just as much as anyone, but where do you draw the line? How much can they continue to pay out? Maybe it is time some of the companies go belly up. Competition breeds development and therefore lower prices for everything. The companies that are left will be stronger and will remember hopefully who pays their bills.

Don't get me wrong, I do not want a cheap boat, motor, rod, reel, etc. I will pay for quality, but there has got to be some relief from what seems to be exorbitant prices on everything we use to catch fish.

Personally I can see 2 different things happening with FLW:
1. Irwin Jacobs gets to buy Ranger back (for a song and dance)from Platinum to keep FLW and the new Ranger together or
2. He sells FLW (since he no longer owns Ranger) to maybe PAA or another organization and they streamline it with another boat manufacturer sponsor.

Remember as Jacobs said " The only reason for FLW is to sell Ranger boats."

In regards to BASS:
They will have to drop the entry fees to keep their Elite Tournaments viable. With all the industry sponsors cutting back it is just too hard for the Regular Elite anglers to maintain their sponsorship funding.

I personally think jacobs is going to be out of the bassin community in its entirety. But thats just my opinion. Everyone seems to think that Skeeter is doing so outstandingly well, but maybe they just have deeper pockets, after all, Merc doesn't make motorcycles too, but they did go into the Corvette motor business for awhile. Not sure how that turned out. Anyway, I prefer the competition of having the two high dollar trails, but they need to be able to co-exist. I think part of the problem was not being able to carry over one sponsor to the other trail. I would think the sponsors would love the chance to be seen on BASS and FLW. I know that would eleminate some guys from having to run two boats with different raps. Anway, I'd just like everyone to think about what is best for the recreational fisherman as well as the pro or aspiring pro. The popularity of the Sport has made a lot of people some pretty decent livings and certainly has caused a lot of us to spend a greater portion of our disposable income to just chase those little green and white fish.

Here is the thing that really gets me mad All these Tournament trails offer incentive money. If you are fishing out of a new ranger that is less than 6 minutes old you could win $30,000 or a new ranger. Why would we want a new ranger if we just bought one 6 minutes ago. These companies have made fishing and boating so expensive the Blue collar working man flag can't afford it. You can't tell me it costs $500 dollars to make a 10 BB reel or $70,000 for a Bass Boat. But everyone keeps buying them, Feeding the monster. I hope they keep raising their prices to where no body in the US can afford them and they all go belly up. de It would serve the greedy A's right. Hopefully some new companys will come out with some new boats, rods and reels at a good price for the American People that everyone could afford. Then we could tell the rest of them to get stuffed.

Man I feel much better now grin

HydraSports was under the OMC umbrella and not Merc. ProCraft is part of the Tracker Marine boat group as of 1998 and never was part of Merc to my knowledge.

Worth adding to that is Triton is now owned by Brunswick (Merc). So there is another one to support your claim.

For the sake of the tournament fisherman, both series needs to survive. Gives anglers an option. Each trail has its niche. People like to slam one organization or the other. They are not charities and have to make business decisions. I want both of them to survive.
