Go see this mornings Dallas Morning News article on this fish. Says it came from a Florida lake, not Japanese. Not much more in details but, seems there is a cloud on the story to me????

OkieBob,

One of us did not read that article correctly. Looks to me like the article clearly states the fish came from a lake in Japan. Maybe I read it wrong tho. Would not be the first time I have done something like that.

We can argue all day about whether George Perry's fish was actually the weight stated in the record book or not, but there is no way to prove it now. Seems like every time someone wants some publicity they start another rumor abut how the fish was caught, about the weight and even abut who caught it.

The IGFA has accepted the weight of George Perry's fish as 22.4. My understanding of their rules is that the breaking the record requires an entry that weighs at least 2 ounces more. Although this fish caught in Japan is a monster, it does not meet the criteria for a new record. Sounds like the IGFA rules need to be changed. But, the time to change the rules is not when an entry is being considered for a record. Now that a decision has been made on this entry, maybe they should revisit the rules.

Where does it say the fish was caught in a Florida lake?

It doesn't. It says the fish was caught in Lake Biwa in Japan. Gee, guys. It's only 2 paragraphs.

Time to plan a flight to Japan ... recall reading a related article that mentioned bigger LMB being caught by commercial fishermen in their gillnets in that lake. Probably why the guy assumed the record was 30ish

[quote=E8C-ENG]That sucks. It was a legitimate weight whereas GP's was a magazine artical. There are no postivive pics or anything of GP's bass. At the time GP caught the "WRB" no Fl. strains were in GA, so it would have had to be a Northern strain--a 22lb northern strain? [/quote

Sounds a little "fishy" doesn't it!?!?!

Kurita was ripped off due to a stupid rule. With the digital scales we have nowadays, there should be no 2 oz. rule. Try this: take a 2 oz. bank sinker in your hand. That is a substantial amount of weight isn't it? Poor guy has to share a record with someone else when it is rightfully his alone.
