Just started crappie fishing in the fall. Had a great time. Killed it during the fall. I know that the crappie go deeper during the winter, but do they go deeper with any relation to their shallower fall time spots? I fished in the fall next to a damn, probably 10 yards from the damn. I was all over the crappie. Are the crappie Just further away from the damn in deeper water?, or do they completely relocate during winter? Any help would be great. Thanks.

right now they (not me) are catching alot in the creeks, if you read the posts concerning white rock creek you'll get some good info. concentrate on holes with some kind of structure. are lot are being caught on white rock creek north of the lawther bridge from 3-4pm till dark.

i am relatively new to freshwater fishing but i think that is the pattern for this time of year..creek fishing. not just white rock creek. if you have any major creeks i think the same pattern would hold. there are some really knowledgable people on here though that can help more than me. good luck,

Your crappie should be roaming around following bait fish.

Your bait fish will roam around and/or ball up in seemingly "safe" areas. (i.e. humps, depressions, creek channels, etc)

Find the bait fish. Find the crappie.

Be on the lookout in the 20+ feet of water range.

Hope that helps some.

When talking about a creek channel, we arent talking about the actual creek, right? We are talking about where the creek used to run prior to the impoundment of a lake?

Correctamundo.

Creek channels will often times form deep, underwater ledges.

Also, any small dip or depression will hold baitfish.

Remember, depth change is relative.

If you're on a flat for 200 yards and it comes up 1 or 2 feet or goes down 1 or 2 feet, and then continues on the flat, that could be enough to hold fish.

We are talking about the actual creek itself above the lake or just a creek with no lake.

Creek: a long ditch full of water that empties into a river.

Slow.....slow....slow.

Do a search for "spider rigging" and you should get all of the information that you need.

And to answer your question on who's right????

Everybody's right. There's no wrong way to do this. laugh

jlquits- man I bet your confused now! Let me see if I can answer your question. First of all, the fish you were catching on the dam are most likely just deeper on the dam. Here on CC during the summer you can catch crappie in 15ft of water. As the water temp drops the fish including the bait fish will go deeper. Right now the fish are holding in the 25-35ft range. As you drive all over the lake most all the bait is in this depth. This depth will change as the water temp changes with the seasons. The dam however is a place you can crappie fish year around.

Creeks (actual creeks) are the exception to the rule. Crappie will sometimes make runs into these creeks following bait. These creeks in most cases have there own eco system. They are full of bait and offer all the things a crappie needs to live there year around. The crappie are actually in alot of these creeks all year long. Most people just dont fish there when they can fish the main lake. Winter time is just an excellent time to walk the banks and take advantage of this.

When people say "fishing creek channels" they are usually talking about submerged creek channels under the main lake. These are deep and require a boat unless it is near the lake bank.

When people say "fishing creeks" they mean up into the creeks that are flowing into the main lake. These can be fished from the bank.

Are you more or less confused? confused

My vote is for Paty. No confusion there. Looks like you are getting plenty of advice. Has any of it helped yet?
