I have a buddy that caught one on a Spinnerbait while fishing for bass. I did not think that there was tilapia on Choke, but I was wrong. He took a pic using his phone and showed it to me and his dad.

Tilapia along with bluegill is a main food source for Largemouth Bass. In my opinion its a good thing they are there it will help the Bass grow alot! And since bluegill eat more small critters and tilapia usually eat more vegitation they dont compete for food. I have several Bass ponds I stock with tilapia along with the bluegill.

I dont know what the guys I saw caught them on, I just saw a bunch in their cooler.
Though some people dont appreciate the info., I am glad to know this because, like most people know, Tilapia are eaten by bass.
These same guys keep jumping on my post and trying to start trouble!

It very weird, I have fished Choke hard for the past several years now, and I never knew that there was Tilapia in the lake untill a few months ago.
I had heard people say there was, but since I had never seen or caught one with all of the fishing I did out there, i just thought they were mistaken. Usually you will catch Tilapia on lakes that have them, while fishing for bass. They will readily take small crankbaits and other cranking lures. On Fayette I catch several Tilapia every time I have gone, which is about 5 or 6 times. So, I figured that if they were on Choke I would have caught one!
However, the other day at the boat ramp I was talking to some guys fishing from the bank. They had a big cooler and I looked inside and saw it to be filled with football sized Tilapia! I was amazed! Now, I dont know how many are in the lake, but apparently they are in catchable numbers if you throw the right bait. However, I wonder why i never have caught any while bass fishing! I am not trying to start trouble, I just find the above VERY hard to beleive. I have fishied areas where Tilapia could be netted by the hundreds and have only foul hooked a couple. Never have I had one bite a crank bait. I know that you can (at times)catch them with small flies but not on crank baits. Have an nice day.

I catch 1-2 tilapia every time I fish the creeks around South Texas! I fish Booyah Pond Majic spinnerbaits a lot and thats the bait I usually catching them on. I think they bite it because they're mad. I never foul hook them, I always hook them in the mouth! This is intriging! It seems some of us catch these things regularly on artificials and some of us don't. Very interesting!!

Bass do love them.....I see them slappin them up on the bank on Martin all the time. Find the little 2 to 3 inch tilapia and you'll find bass most of the time.
And I'm not rippin the guy....its possible. I've caught them on night crawlers fishing with my nephews.....so they aren't 100% vegetarians or anything.

In many of the developing countries where tilapia is raised, farming practices are less environmentally friendly than in the U.S. Since tilapia are not native to these areas, severe ecological damage can occur if tilapia escape to the wild. They can out-compete native species and greatly reduce aquatic vegetation. Most tilapia in the U.S. market are one of three species: blue, Mozambique and Nile Tilapia is the third most important fish in aquaculture after carps and salmonids Tilapia serve as a natural, biological control for most aquatic plant problems. Tilapia consume floating aquatic plants, such as duckweed watermeal (Lemna sp.), most "undesirable" submerged plants and most forms of algae.[15] In the United States and countries such as Thailand, Tilapia are becoming the plant control method of choice, reducing/eliminating the use of toxic chemicals and heavy metal-based algaecides. Tilapia rarely compete with other "pond" fish for food. Instead, because tilapia consume plants and nutrients unused by other fish species and substantially reduce oxygen depleting detritus, adding tilapia often increases the population, size and health of other fish. Arizona stocks tilapia in the canals that serve as the drinking water sources for the cities of Phoenix, Mesa and others. The fish help purify the water by consuming vegetation and detritus, greatly reducing purification costs.

Blue Tilapia specie does NOT eat vegetation intentionally, they eat algae and mold mostly. They can ingest a leaf if algae and mold are on them. They will exist on just the mold and algae found on a dam surface wall. They will occasionally take a live bait.
Some other Tilapia specie are known to eat plants.
