Lake Fork Public Meeting Planned

Anyone interested in Lake Fork should save this date: February 4, 2010.

On that date the Wood County Industrial Commission and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be hosting a public meeting at Lake Fork. This State of the Lake meeting will feature presentations by TPWD Inland Fisheries biologists and Sabine River Authority representatives.

Topics will include, but are not limited to: the status of the largemouth bass fishery at Lake Fork, invasive aquatic vegetation control, and water pumping activities. A large portion of the meeting will be reserved for attendees to ask questions in a town hall format.

All local business owners, lake homeowners, fishing guides, recreational anglers, and anyone else with an interest in the resources at Lake Fork are invited to attend.

This public meeting will take place from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Lands End Fire Department.

Additional details, including driving directions to the Lands End Fire Department and a meeting agenda will be released in January.

For questions or additional information concerning the upcoming meeting, please contact TPWD Inland Fisheries management personnel in Tyler at (903) 593-5077.

I don't think they'll pull much water from Fork. It's most likely going to be a last resort for them since the expense is so great.

But if they do, I believe will actually improve fishing -- same number of fish, but in less water. Also, I think it will help the hydrilla flourish.

Hopefully they will listen and take some sensible action to maintain it. Fork is a Texas treasure that needs to be taken care of.

In a book I was reading recently, they had a small section that talked about a survey taken from June of 1994 to May of 1995 that was around fishing trips to Fork. It was estimated that there were 205,000 trips with almost $16,000,000 spent in the Lake Fork area as a result of those trips, with an additional $10,000,000 spent elsewhere in Texas due to those travelers.

I found those numbers to be quite amazing..as I never thought about it that way before. Not sure what those numbers look like now, but it's clear that the lake is important to the surrounding area and many people's economic lives depend on it.

Watch out for the deer in the area. It's common to see deer running across the road in that area after dark. The closer you get the golf course the more deer you will see. I will try and be there also.
