It wasn't all his fault, I didn't get a good hook-set. What's worse is he didn't buy the boat, even after getting a free fishing trip.

That is a shame on both the fish and the boat. I have either had fish knocked off by the netter or the hook gets caught in the net and it takes forever to clear. Now I just lip the fish if over 2 lbs and jerk it in if under. Hadn't lost one yet by trying to lip, especially since I have gone to Gamagatsu hooks.

This has been the toughest year on Pool for over the slot fish that I have seen in several years. Most years,(I'm on the water there most weeks at least a day or two) I average 15 to 20 legtimate "overs". I've had several days in past years that I've caught 2 overs the same day. This year, though, I have had several "wannabes", i.e. fish around 20 inches, but only one legitmate over, the 8 1/2 pounder I posted about in the late spring.

They are still there---the lack of grass means you have to be very precise in fishing available cover (brushpiles mainly), and have a good bit of luck with your timing---you may have to revisit a good spot several times before you mget a bite some days--really frustrating! I also think the bass are using deeper structure than previously---the sand bass are a faster species, and I believe they have kind of "taken over" a lot of the shallower humps and driven the slower black bass even deeper.
