For some reason I think this post should be in the Classifieds, obviously this is to solicit
the sale of Quantum reels by the originator of this thread.. Stephen ?

Ill bite anyway, Kay is solely a lefty, I can use either arm to cast or retrieve, got that from my Grand pa. I do see the advantage in a right hand cast with a left hand retrieve.
I do however prefer to cast right, switch and reel with my right with baitcasters. I was raised on the Mitchell 300 on the coast in the Late 50s and early 60s all our family reels were right hand cast left hand retrieve. Thats the way it was, no choice back then, it was what it was.

I fish left handed reels and will be getting some new one later... Dang cheap ones I have now are falling apart.
If you grew up in the North we mostly fished spinning gear and it comes off the shelf left handed. If you grew up in the south Zebco ruled for kids and they come with the right handed handle so your most likely a rod swapper.

My situation exactly! I remember on my first guided trip on Lake Fork when Jimmy Everett (the full-service guide who did everything for me, including picking out a backlash--He was a great guide) took my rod from me to rig it and could barely turn the handle because he wasn't used to it. Was pretty funny and one of the highlights of my trip.

I am right handed and have cast with my right hand and reeled left handed since I was a kid. I hate when people switch my spinning reels and don't switch them back later.

+1. I switched in the 80's after fishing with an spinning rig, it felt more natural, now I cant use a righty, feels akward

Right handed for bait casting, left handed for spinning.

I'm right handed but use left handed reels on spinning and baitcasting rigs - faster reaction and I'm stronger in my right arm and wrist. Been using left hand spinning reels since 1958!

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I did about 12 years ago only because I came across a great deal on about 5 Shimano baitcasters, and some nice rods that a guy was giving away at my mom's office. Made perfect sense to me to switch if I was getting some nice rigs for free. lol

I'm right handed.

Right hand retrieve--spinner baits, crank baits, and topwater

Left hand retrieve--jigs, soft plastics, c-rigs, and spinning reels

Why??? Just seems easier.

I learned on my family's old Mitchell 308's not spincasting gear, so I learned to reel with my left. It felt natural when I went to baitcasting gear, and luckily I'm of the age (29 now)that left handed retrieve had just started to become more available.

I'm right handed and have bunches of right hand crank reels and one left. I know the advantages of the left: Instant control of the bait as soon as it hits the water, more casts, etc. But I still do the right reel more, partly because I'm used to holding the rod differently when I cast than when I retrieve. To get the full advantage of the left I have to hold the rod with two fingers ahead of the trigger both on the cast and the retrieve which is a little clumsy for me, but I can do it and have had success with it. I like it for throwing traps into tight cover so I can instantly start and guide the lure as soon as it hits the water. It also works pretty well for pitching for me.
