Anyone have any thoughts on this reel? It is classified as a saltwater reel, but could be used as freshwater. It has a 7:1 ratio. The Academy in my area said these are marked way down from their original price.

How much are they marked down? Pretty good reel IMO. They just have a coating to keep from gettin corroded in the saltwater, other than that, it's an energy pt. That's all I have is Quantum and LOVE them.

I had 4 of them and took 3 back to Academy. Very difficult (compared to Revo and Curado) to get set correctly with light lures. I KNOW how to setup reels but these seemed to have issues more than normal.
I kept one for Carolina Rig fishing and like it.

Check with the guy behind the counter. He can check his computer and find some at another store and have them shipped to his location. The guy at the store near me did that.

I have one on a 7ft MH action faclon lowrider i use for crankbaits and i love it. I used this combo when i went redfishing in port A back in august and it worked great there as well. I think you cant pass them up at that price. ($60.00)

I have an Energy PT and 2 Tour Editions from that series, and that reel is definitely worth $60. I'd say they should have been about $150 and $200, respectively, originally. The external finish is as durable as you'll find on a reel (at least on the freshwater versions).
Light lures may be a problem (I've thrown weightless trick worms and 1/4 oz cranks all the time on mine though), but these reels will throw a normal size lure a mile. They are my best reels for launching a lure.
They make a buzzing on the cast that can vary a bit from reel to reel, it's just a quirk of the reel...

I picked a few of them up. They are a little large, a little heavy but very smooth and casts great. Hard to beat for 60 bucks, with 20 plus pounds of drag to boot.
Thanks, Billy

reguardless of what the max drag pressure actually is, these and the 2010 models have VERY smooth drags. No complaints there.
Just be careful, the main washer is a "dry" washer. The reel will not retain max drag pressure if you grease it or get oil on it. Just a heads up if any of you guys go to clean one of these.
This is not a negative of the reel, just a characteristic of the drag washer/system, fwiw.
