Why do these baits cost so much? It looks like a Pop-R to me, but I do see many of you guys suggesting the use of them. Do they have some kind of secret MOJO dust sprinkled on them?

Nope, just because we will pay it. Bought one at BPS 10 days ago and I think it was around 16.00. I paid it and went on about my business.

Am I correct with the statement of "it looks like a Pop-R"? I'm a BIG fan of the bone colored Pop-R!!!!

I bought one at Rayburn. Does look like a pop r, but people swear by em. Gotta try em out on Belton and Stillhouse to see what happens.

UncleFunky, I have never thrown one. But if everyone is throwing a Magic and no one is throwing a Pop R then people will be catching them on a Magic. Before you invest in one I would recommend if you know someone that has one, ask them if you can throw it to see the difference between the two. Sometimes baits can look the same and have a totaly different action and sometimes it's just hype and all in the fishermans head. My dad ask Tom Mann Sr. what the best color of worm was. He said" It doesn't matter as long as it's black, we just make all those other colors for the fisherman" If you have total confidence in a Pop R, don't change. If you have reservations about the Magic being better, try someone's. The best bait is the one you have confidence in.

i could not, for the life of me, bring myself to spend SIXTEEN DOLLARS AND SOME-ODD CENTS on one friggin' lure.
i'd rather buy 5 cheap ones.
just my opinion.

Was just in Japan, and all of their lures start at about $15.00. A bag of Zoom worms $8.00. I am just happy to have a choice. These prices were in a small Bass tackle store in Osaka.

Well I like the Yellow Magic, but, The Megabass Pop X and Pop Max are the ticket for me, they make sounds and behave differently than any other popper, so... it's new to the bass.
The Yellow magic is similar in shape to a Rebel PopR but most poppers are. I still get tons of bites on Pop Rs, Yellow Magics, zell pops and my old stand by... The Hula Popper!
The best advice I could offer is: Spend what your comfortable spending and use what makes you confident.
Coach Dog Hula Poppers... man they've slayed some fish for me.

I never did offer my take on the high cost.
Import taxes, Japan's more powerful currency, "World Wide Prestige", Illuminati.
Basically fishing is becoming all other professional sports and the costs...and drama... go up with that.

just my opinion. I was right there with you on this statement until I saw that lure hanging there in front of me two weeks ago. Something put my hand on that rack and before I knew what happened it was through the checkout. I fished it hard on Rayburn the following three days and never got a hit on it. We did catch our better fish on topwater(Black Buzzbait) that cost $2.49. Go figure.

They cost 16 bucks ,cause some people will pay 16 bucks to say they have one. Then of cousre they fish with it and catch fish cause its the only one they use. Then they tell someone else how awesome it is and their buddy goes out and buys one too. Then the ball keeps on rolling until its a "must have" in any serious fishermans tackle box.In all reality,it is supposed to sit perfectly level in the water...or sit straight up at rest. One or the other.I don't know cause I would never pay 16 bucks for one.

I've fished both and the Yellow Magic has a slightly different mount shape has a slightly different action.
The Yellow Magic also has a much better tail. The feathers give more of a tease and I've also added the same type feathers to many of my other topwaters, including PoP'Rs.

Precision machine cut body versus molded body. The shape is completely different than the common Pop-R, thus giving a better action. Hand painted as well. I have a buddy who hand makes all the wood muskie lures he makes (about 4500-5000 a year) and he sells them all for about $25-$40 each and people are still calling him to make more.

I'm a sucker for a good looking bait, but until they put lipstick, high heals and large breasts on it I'll stick with my Pop R.
Thanks guys...

I've got a couple yellow magics. One that I keep tied on all the time has lost it's feathers and about 2/3 of the paint. It still catches fish. I've always been a huge pop-r fan and still fish them occasionally. The visible difference for me is that you can 'walk the dog' better with the yellow magic than with a pop-r.
