Here are some pics of my new perch tank. It is 200 gallon water trough. It has a aereator on it from a commercial minnow tank. Check it out. It has abou 50-60 bluegills in it now from 3" to 8". Plenty of good bait to chase the "yellas" with.

oh yeah,
total cost $38
It was a junk (free) water trough that I sealed using silicone that I had laying around. The aerator costs $26 with shipping on Ebay. And $12 for the water conditioner, but I will have enough to do this tank 5 times.

You might need a top of some kind to keep critters out.

It is right next to my front door and the varmits usually are not able to get them when they are 2' deep. I plan on building a top before next summer, the water gets sunlight about 5 hrs a day.
I think that the aeration is WAY overkill, these perch are much more active than when I caught them in the tank next to my house.

Get some bird netting (sold at Lowe's , Wal Mart, etc. for keeping birds out of your fruit trees) , cover the top of the tank and tie some strong twine (or a really big rubber band) around it to keep it in place. It'll choke any snake that tries to get through and frustrate the heck out of any cats, coons or possums in the area. You can then just lay a tarp over the top when the weather turns hot.

I used to keep goldfish to fish with, got them for $5.00 a lb back then, had a trough just like that one, killed a 4 1/2 foot and a 2'0 Velvet-tail Rattlesnakes out there, never had one before or since then, just keep an eye out, hopefully you won't have any trouble with snakes!!!

plywood. drill some holes in it for a your fingers. not as perdy but will keep the leaves, critters & other falling junk out and shouldnt be as much trouble getting on and off.

You can never have to much aeration. For now just put it on a timer. they sell the for about 8-10 dollars. You can turn the pump on 4 times a day instead of all day long. Just a thought.

Drill the holes but put some cabinet door handles on it for lifting it. Black widows love to build their webs underneath a plank of wood ( ask anybody who ever had an outhouse). eek2
