For those who use these small hooks, how do you keep the 'gills from being gut-hooked all the time?

Use a long shank number 6, rather than 8, and try to set the hook pretty fast, before the gill swallows the hook.

I don't buy the original Beetle Spin. I buy the generic jig spinners and use Creekside curly tail jigs on a 1/8 oz. head. Black and blue with a chartruse tail have been killing them lately. Pumpkin seed is also good. I let it sink and reel slowly, bumping it off the bottom. I fish in some tight places and just a little motion will work.

Thespis, recently I've flipped a Beetle Spin into the back of an open boatstall, let it sink to the bottom, and caught small catfish on it as well as bluegills. I guess any kind of fish will eat it.

get the gulp 3 inch minnows in smelt i had a decent bluegill on that.but also do a drop shot rig and cut off the leader. Run it weightless and just raise the tip of your rod and lower it. i had a 2 pound striped bass a good size crappie and a good size bluegill all off of the gulp minnows in smelt.

try cut up squares of chicken flavor hot dogs instead of nightcrawlers... use the smallest hook possible and cut the square so small that it fits in the fish mouth... u will leave with a bucket full of fish.... i have been doing this for years and every once in a while u will get a nice surprise and BAMBBBBBBBB a big catfish or carp...

Yesterday I was fishing Lady Bird for the multi species competition on TxFishes.com, and got no takers on corn or small jigs; caught all mine on bread! Rolled up little balls, just large enough to cover the hook bend, leaving the hookpoint out.

Do you know of an artificial that will work under a cork, i.e. without any movement like in open water.

Greetings from Michigan.

Yes, there is an artifical lure for giant bluegills and it works well anywhere with a float and even a sinker.

Now in my "old age" I've built a hobby website and plan to post the whole story there within the next couple of weeks.

Slim Jim pieces work for me. They like the garlic and it stays on the hook.

I've been catching 40 to 75 a trip using a 1/100th jig and the Gulp waxies/maggots in chartreuse. They work great!

Has anybody had good luck fishing with small crickets or grasshoppers lately?

I see people fishing with crickets. I never cared for them I always have trouble getting just one out of the container and usually have 4 or 5 in the lose in the boat. Reports from Caddo say crickets are one of the best baits through the summer.
