Always wondered why the boat racers always have a co-pilot. Besides ballast, what's the co-pilots job in this race?

Always wondered why the boat racers always have a co-pilot. Besides ballast, what's the co-pilots job in this race? The co pilot is telling the driver whats next. The driver is driving the co pilot is navigating by hand signals. Also as a ballast like you said. Sounds like a chevy to me...Lol
