on his southwest outdoors report show this week, he was fishing out at cooper lake for hybrids. he was using a big spoon/jig, fishing the mid-lake humps and ridges.

he said if you want to catch sand bass, you should bounce the jig off the bottom somewhat slowly. but if you want to catch hybrids, and the bigger hybrids, you should cast it out, let it hit the bottom, then reel it up really fast maybe 8-9 cranks...then let it fall and repeat.

is that true? reel faster for bigger fish, i.e. hybrids???

Barry Stokes did catch some nice fish on that show and the lake and facilities looked great - - wish it were closer! Surely not the only method to catch 'em, but I'm sure burning-then-falling will catch some when they're active.

Burning the lure then letting it fall is a good tactic at times but I dont think it will cause you to distinguish between species!

This works well on White Rock peep

Seriously though, this does work, but you don't have to cast it out unless you are in really shallow water. However, it doesn't work all of the time, only certain times of the year.

So, what times of the year does it work great?

It works really great when it works. Just like any thing else, lure presentation is real important so try different presentations.

That day it seemed to work really well for Barry.

I didn't see the show so I have no idea what he said.

In real deep water like 40 to 50ft I burn a slab from bottom up because bigger fish will be at the bottom of the school. Small fish on top, big fish on bottom.
