SD, doesn't matter what depth it is caught. It depends on the livewell condition, how long out of the water, the temp of the water, stress from being caught, low oxygen levels due to warm water etc. etc. I have caught surface fish that needed it. And you have to remember that those fish can be acclimated to deep water and just moved up to feed for a brief period too. But your livewell situation causes a LOT of this besides the depth at which they are caught.

Anotherwords, hot water, a fish the size of that you are holding in that picture, stress from the fight, low oxygen levels from hot water. All are factors. Hold a fish out of the water for say more then 30 seconds is like if I grabbed you by the throat and squeezed. Different scenario, they are not human, but you get what I mean when it comes to stress.

I follow Sure-Life's livewell recommendations to the T. I do it because I know it works. Now that I have the KoolWell system installed , it kinda like cheating and has put my mind back more on fishing because I don't have to worry about livewell temps anymore. Less stress on ME ! LMAO

i went fishing to falcon and we caught a lot of fish, we had them in the livewell to try the aerator cause it was fixed and then all of the fish were belly up so i took out my bends mender and fizzed them out but they didnt float normal again, instead they were landing on the bottom on their side , so we released them before they died , the only thing i did wrong i think was that i didnt put the finger up and the water got in there can you tellme how to do it please

What you did wrong was you let out too much air. When they go to the bottom and lay on their sides, that is what happens. Read the above posts from the beginning. It walks you through it step by step. They also are tired and energy spent as well from riding upside down in your livewell with low dissolved oxygen levels and water temps that are too hot. Ice, catch and release (for chlorine removal, slime retention etc.) and hydrogen peroxide in the amount prescribed on http://www.sure-life.com fish care section to help put oxygen into the water (or bottled pure oxygen) is the deal this time of year if you are going to keep fish in a livewell any length of time. And no, colder livewell temps don't hurt them a bit. Cold water holds more oxygen, and besides, most fish are coming out of water that is 10 degrees or colder than the surface temp this time of year anyway. Thermoclines tend to be shallower this time of year.

Just FYI, there will be a video made here at the lodge on the last weekend of August showing the technique with narration. Will be posted soon after.
