I shoot them and leave em for the vultures......... on private land of course..

I would never kill the thing if I wasn't going to eat it.
I would just cut the line as close to the hook as possible and release the animal.
I have eaten turtles before (soft shell) and they are great.

I fish for Gar in the Mission River in Refugio and it never fails that I get @ least one of those big softshelled turtles...I cut the line right when I know what it is... Man that is some good eatin there. Even if you are gonna let em go all you gotta do is use the line to pull there head out, grab head like you would a snake and remove hook. Then you don't have to re-tie.

If you get a alligator snapper on , just place left thumb in lower jaw and remove hook! After that you will have a new nickname-- Numb! Just cut the line.
