Look at the size of the fish compared to his hands. I think it must have been a hybrid of some kind. We let him go. Thanks for putting this up "ddp".

Its a hybrid Sunfish-

The hybrid bream is a hatchery cross between a male bluegill and a female green sunfish. The offspring exhibits characteristics of both parents. It's not quite as deep in the body as the bluegill but is deeper bodied than the green sunfish. The mouth is larger than the bluegill but smaller than the green sunfish. The color markings have no distinct patterns as do the parents, and hybrids may appear speckled or mottled.

That is my son. We were at a farm pond near Alvord. I saw him catch the fish and I took the picture. It hit a Pop-R. Now the pic is here for othere viewing PLEASURE. I even mentioned in a previous post that it is probably a hybrid. I swear, something just doesn't look right??? Sheesh! For clarification, it is a GIANT HYBRID BLUEGILL, a great fish that you would have killed but we let go. Happy?

I wasn't all that much against killing him, we have caught these out of Lake Athens and kept them. The landowner didn't want us to and we weren't really there to bring home fish. It was a father/son church deal. I know it was a heck of a fight on ultralight tackle and line.

Catfish, I am from Alabama and I have seen bream, bluegill, or sunfish caught that were monsters. In Alabama, we called these "shellcrackers". We used to catch them on crickets with a porkipine quill floater. These guys in Texas probably havent ever seen that.

Great catch. The only problem is, it bigger than most of the crappie I have been seeing. Congrats to your boy, and the memories. That picture needs to be blown up and framed. I like it when my kids catch bigger fish than me! It means I taught them well.

That picture is easy to believe, my brother caught one the size
of a small dinner plate at Stonebridge. We were so worried about
getting the Bass hook out without killing it, we didn't think of
taking a picture. Great picture!

Nice fish. That's a real pic. Hybrid bluegill. Caught a couple of those dudes in E. Texas on a black lizard. They fight LIKE A BEAST!

Got a pond near my house full of those although not quite that size that i have caught, but i have no doubt there are some in there like the one in your pic!

Bottom line, it's a beauty! Biggest ones we have caught so far from there push a pound, maybe a skosh over, and are in the 10 inch range.
