Year in and year out Amistad is the most consistant and the prettiest. Even though Amistad has been kind off since it has been staying over pool for the past year you can still go out any day and down size and catch numbers. Right now Ivie is the hot lake and is the prettiest drive from San Antonio and the lake is pretty nice also. Choke has been on fire this year but it is not the prettiest of lakes and surely is not a lake to take cool off dips in with all the aligators and snakes. When Falcon has stable water levels and when you locate fish there still is not any lake in this country that can match it for numbers of large size fish. There is also no lake with large mouth that fight as hard as Falcon bass.

Lake Kurth...
May not be the "best" lake but I have more fun on that lake than any other, which makes it the best for me.
Tons of gators and other critters with clear water and low fishing pressure. Always entertained on Lake Kurth.

I just got back from 3 days of fishing Choke Canyon during a full moon. I've never seen so much wildlife at a lake. We saw lot's of deer, turkey, gator, armadillo and so many different species of birds that I couldn't keep count. Plus, we caught a ton of chunky fish.
Amistad has better landscape scenery and facilities close by, but if you're looking to get back to nature, Choke would be hard to beat, IMO. I haven't been to Falcon (next on the list), but came from the DFW area last year, so I've fished most of the lakes previously listed. I've only fished Rayburn a couple of times (and never TBend or Caddo), but from what I've seen, south Texas is where it's at, for both fish quality and scenery.

Falcon-Amistad-Choke!
Those three lakes have all those factors mentioned above!

I would have to go with Lake Whitney. It has smallmouth, largemouth, whites, & stripers. The reason I pick Whitney over some of the more popular lakes is location. It is fairly close to me.
I love Amistad & Choke, but a basis for an all around lake would have to location as well as species of fish, etc.....

There isn't much you can't catch on Toledo Bend. White bass run is great. Legendary crappie, bream and bass fishing. Catfish are easily had and it has both stripers and hybrids. Plenty of places to stay all over the lake.

Caddo. No other lake like it, and full of several different types of fish and wildlife. It has been said before here, but worth saying again. If you are a fisherman, you have to go to Caddo at least once.
