Well, it really is a fishing term, anyway. I guess you must've missed out on f***edcompany.com, which was where some of the best - and unfortunately, also most vicious and hurtful - message board trolling ever went on. Edit: Robin beat me to the link!

just read the wiki report on trolls. so a troll is someone with alternatate online personalities??? and cause organized chaos among the internet group? i don't get it -- whats the purpose? A troll is a person that posts things intended to illicit a response for no other purpose than their own amusement. It is frequently done in such a masterful way that people don't know they are being trolled, they take the bait "hook, line, and sinker", and the troll has accomplished their mission. In our case, the troll has no skills or finesse, and was just annoying. Frequently a finely tuned sarcasm meter is required to detect troll-like typing. Non-internet savvy people may be confused, burnt out cynical net users have far less patience and will call people out or ban them (and rightfully so). Frequently a troll will use an alternate username, thereby protecting their identity in case they're banned. Most site these days can check an ip and correlate the alt id to the actual user, and ban them both.

Something similar happened to my best friend and I in Galveston bay except we were trying to get home to go eat with the missus. We were in a boat that could plane on a raindrop and they were in one that had more below the waterline than above and I guess they thought we wanted to race. We cut between some islands to get into the ICW with them right beside us and they came to a sudden stop on an oyster bed while we kept on for a bit and then turned around because its the law or some stupid thing to not leave someone stranded on the water... even jerks.
I wouldn't sweat it. Bad things happen to bad people too. If they were casting to your spot I find it completely acceptable to see fish on the other side of their lines that I want to catch. The likelyhood that a snag may occur is great and I have no choice but to cut a line to get my lure back.

yep happened to me today. Took the 2 girls out with me for a quick cast before other errands. Got to the pond edge only other person was a baitcaster literally 300 yards away. Sat down my gear set up the girls poles (took 2 minutes) stand up and in that time he has come to within 20 feet of us. Not casting perpendicular to the pond edge but at 45 degrees or so towards us. Casting in our casting zone. I lined up and cast in his baits general vicinity. He looked bewildered. Either wondering why I was fishing with a green stick and neon chartreuse line or why I was casting in his casting zone. He pulled in, went 10 feet to the other side of us and continued on. This is by noooooo means a small pond. Any way guess he was fishing on his lunch break, because he'd cast reel in and walk 5-10 feet....and repeat. It was like speed golf but different and a bit less etiquette. Anyway didn't act out because i had the girls with me and didn't want them to learn that at this early stage in their life.
