Hey Old Town,
Disappointingly, I have not found a "real good" chicken fried steak since returning to Texas 7 years ago. I've had a couple that were fair but nothing that excited me.
I must add a disclaimer in that I have not gone hunting for the "best" one, just tried a few from time to time.
Still searching for the "Perfect" CFS.

Mary's is the best I've ever had. I've been eating there since about 90 or 91 and they were absolutely the best until about 2000 or so. The quality started tapering off. They didn't change hands they were just off. Then a few years ago they got on their game again. I don't like fries with a CFS anyway and I don't like those kind of fries on top of that. I don't care to have the salad on the same plate either but as far as the CFS, it's the best I've ever had. I usually only get a small nowadays. I would prefer it with mashed potatoes and green beans or broccoli, but what the hell: you can't have every thing and I don't like to rock the boat when I'm in a place. I just like to get it like they serve it and make due. I still think it's the best tasting CFS.

My favorite CFS place so far
Cole Mountain Catering Company 419 East Moore Terrell Texas 75160 Phone: (972) 524-0498
Old West atmosphere, good prices, great CFS. Tried their BBQ but not quite up to snuff. Next time I go gonna get the Hamburger Steak. That was my favorite meal at Ward's Restaurant in Marshall 40 years ago.

Was Ward's over near where the mall and high school are now? I think that was the place?

Seems like you just don't get much meat in lots of chicken fried steaks. The Honey Creek Restaurant in Spring Branch (about 15 minutes west of 281 on Hwy 46) serves a chicken fried pork loin, tender and juicy, that's a nice change of pace. The regular portion is way, way more than I can handle, but you can get a half portion as an open sandwich. They have an interesting little website.

It may be good but I just checked their website and the regular CFS is 14 dollars and the big is 17 dollars. Damn, that must be a good one.

Well, the Honey Creek chicken fried steak or pork loin sandwich with fries will run you $8.00. It's all I can handle, and I'm a svelte 240. There's some serious meat involved here.

Went to the Dixie Grille in Seguin on Friday. It's a pretty good place. The CFS I had was good, but not what you'd call excellent.
The place is really cool. They serve tea in plastic pitchers (smaller versions of the tea p;itcher the waitress brings).
