Look at 0:15 in the video. The fish is gasping and the pectoral fin is moving. It is alive at that point. Maybe a little shocking to think you are actually watching the WR largemouth dying.

Like Cam said isn't it ironic that the U.S. has practiced catch and release so religiously over the last 40 years and could not break the record and then come to find out the record get broken in a country where catch and release is illegal? Maybe we don't know as much as we thought we did.

Here is one of the few articles available on fishing Lake Biwa. http://www.flwoutdoors.com/article.cfm?id=136912Even though several huge bass have come from this lake it seems that overall the bass fishing is hardly enviable with most 5 fish stringers in the 6-7 lb range and a 14 lb stringer being a major accomplishment. It is no great mystery how this can occur. Keep everything and thin the population to a number of small and a few large survivors. The few large survivors, in prime conditions, will thrive without competition for food or environment. Then, on a rare occasion one of the giants is caught. In this case it was a superbass, the potential WR. I'm not a Fisheries Biologist, but these are basic principles of fisheries management. It probably would not be very popular to manage our waters this way. To have a few junior bass to catch and virtually no mid sized fish but having a small number of behemoths out there somewhere. We try to maintain a balance according to what the lake can support. Keeping a number of smaller fish and releasing the larger ones will help create a situation where they can achieve higher growth potential.

Largemouths are an invasive species there, It would be like catching a snakehead here and releasing it back into the water... still sucks tho
