I see a lot of snakes these days (I usually fish mornings) at grapevine. Are most of the snakes at grapevine just watersnakes or are there a lot of cottonmouths there? I'm no snake expert and my friends commonly refer to me as the "snake pu..y" so any snake freaks me out.

I have seen that increase in snake activity at GP this year myself.
While most I have seen this year are just common water snakes I have seen quite a few young water moccasins and one adult of impressive size, so watch your step and act like everyone you see is a bad one and give them a wide berth.

Yeah but you were guiding for beer that day so what the F is that to us that don't dig snakes? I am all right if I can see them coming but when one pops up in my hip pocket I tend to walk on water...

1FisherJZ- Thats cool, keep picking and throwing every snake you see (cause there are not really any water moccasins in Texas anyhow...just harmless water snakes), the bank as been a bit crowded lately and I could use a bit more elbow room. laugh

Redraider4life- I know what you mean, just last weekend I was watching a snake swim across this cut I was fishing and I had just told myself to keep a sharp lookout and had just finished scanning the ground around me (just in case) when I heard a commotion in the water by my feet. I looked down and saw a very big snake racing into deeper water from the shallows with the mud boil he left being a mere foot or two from where I was standing. Talk about a 1 minute case of the heebi-jeebies.
I will not even describe my reaction when I almost stepped on one 4 weeks ago in the shoredside weeds and when it spooked it spooked straight towards me! eek

I've noticed what seems to be a lot more than last year out at Lewisville, too. Maybe it has something to do with the rising water.

I have been wade fishing some flats up there (lewisville) and see several snakes on each trip swim up from the bottom as I wade around. Kinda creepy to see one come up out of the silt and poke up right by your waders before it swims back down to the bottom.

a way to tell venomous snakes from non is easy in the water. if when they stop swimming the body sinks and the head is all you see, it is non venomous. if the whole thing floats, give it some room.

ya'll should remember, the past couple of years the waters have been way up and way down. When they are up, EVERYTHING spawns better, thus probably increasing the snake population.
