I have no experiance with the e-tec motors. I bougt a clean triton tr-18
with a 1998 carbed johnson so I can work on it with out a scan tool.
I would like to hear any opinion on the e-tec!

The fich motor ruined most buyers from ever buying a JOHNRUDE again. Is there any comments on the the ETEC MOTORS? All I have heard is positive remarks.

I think this is a Ford vs Chevy debate.
As said before they all make a highly technical and good product. I think the Merc XS may have a bit of a lead in speed, torque, and fuel economy.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

I have an old 1977 Johnson. I love it. Simple to work on and been going strong for 30+ years. I will be in the market for a new boat and motor in the next year or so. I am going to have a problem decide which new motor to buy. I have a huge loyalty to OMC but the company no longer exists. I will have to decide what to buy. Looks like Yammy is the front runner but I would like a 2 stroke. I know they won't be making more 2 strokes. I guess what I am saying is that I will be strugling with a decision before too long.

My son has a 2002 18 skeeter with a 150 yhammer on it. It is a carbed motor. He reads the hammer fourms on BBCentral and the funny thing that Omc parts will fit Hammers ie. a omc trim motor at 1/2 the cost hammer one. I remember that omc suied hammer for a patent right law suit and won. When I pull the cowel of his hammer it looks like a 90 degree omc V6 with old style carbs. Read the Yamaha engine fourms if you doubt this a BBCentral.

While I love the Yamaha corporation, there is no way I'll buy a 4 stroke if I can help it. I'm still running a 1980 V4 Evinrude and have no plans to change. When I get my new boat, it probably wont have a Merc On it...since my friend's 2007 optimax is already rattling like a kitchen in an Italian restaurant. It runs ok, but it's about to come apart. I'll probably look into the Etecs.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Im a Mercury guy but IMHO Mercs and Yammies are in a class of there own. Johnson/ Evinrude were ok back in the day but somewhere down the line they got left behind. Just my opinion but if it aint got a Mercury or Yamaha on it, I aint buying it. I still say the E-Tech is hard to compare anything to. ITs in a league of its own and just an awesome motor. +1

ford or chevy? motorguide or minn kota? maryann or ginger?
my evinrude turns 30 this year, runs as good now as the day it came off the line, maybe better. Even though I have no formal mechanic training of any kind, nothing's ever broke on it that I couldn't fix myself.

I have an '88 Evinrude 48 spl and love it. Bought it in '05 from a guy who just ran it and didn't know much about it, but it still ran ok. Once I linked & synched, timed, rebuilt carbs, replaced plugs, & decarbed, it runs like new. Seems to be one tough motor capable fo a lot of abuse. I did all the maintenance myself and continue to do so. Low part count and all easy to obtain.
+1 for the older Johnny-rudes, up to about 1990 anyway. My 1988 is one of the last with good old-fashioned tech with no oil inject or computers, etc., to worry about. I keep expecting something to go wrong that I can't fix myself but it doesn't happen. It may not be the smoothest or easiest to operate (you do have to know what a primer is for after all) but what I save in being able to fix everything myself more than makes up for any shortcomings. And I've even really enjoyed doing all the maintenance and adjustments myself...actually adds to my boating enjoyment.
So it's a Ford/Chevy type discussion, but I really like my older carbed Evinrude. 100's of hours of boating fun with it in the last 4 years.
