My brother in law has a center console boat with the poles that you mount standing straight up inside the boat. He was casting from the back of the boat, pulled his rod a bit too far back and heaved away. His hook caught a pole in the holders, casting forward gave him such a quick bird nest that the reel stop during the cast, so out flew the rod and reel he hooked. Luckyly the rod and reel stayed on the hook our he would have lost it and the use of the bird nest reel too.

I've also had that problem with a buzz bait and was thinking the same thing. Maybe it is the way the blades catch in the wind!! cool

I was by far the biggest loser this w/e mad So I guess that makes me the winner :p I didn't seem to have the problem until I changed #age on my reel..10 to 15# How does this correlate to the birdnest effect?? I adjusted the drag but seemed to still backlash. confused Very nice on RR Sat. 8AM to 1PM up in Indian. I got skunked on the fluke 2-6ft. (need more practice) Hydrilla was thick up in the shallows. Anyhoo..I was the King as far as backlash contest. rolleyes

I was at Fork a few weeks ago with some buddies. Let me preface this story with the fact that this was a one-week guys trip, so there was plenty of adult beverages and plenty of hangovers as a direct result of those adult beverages. wink

We were able to do a little bit of sight fishing, and since this was a fun and friendly trip we were taking turns up at the front. It was my turn to take a swing at a fish on a bed. I took my tube rod and a second rod up to the front deck and worked on that fish for several minutes. One of my buddies is also on the front deck casting to another spot while I am working on my bed fish. I had a little bit of a backlash wink and rather than picking it out asked my buddy who is up front with me if I could use his tube rod. He obliged and I proceeded to catch my fish.

During this entire time my other buddy (and the brother of my buddy up front) is on the back deck fishing. At some point he had managed to make his way to the front of the boat and without me noticing deposit some old line in my reel and position it well enough that it had the appearance of being the mother of all back lashes. wink

Remember at the beginning of this story I had mentioned adult beverages and hangovers. I was nursing a pretty severe hangover at this point. Well I go to retrieve both of my rods, fully expecting to have to work on one backlash. But to my surprise there are two backlashes that need attention. shocked I examined the second rod to make da#n sure it is my rod, and after confirming it was I began to dog cuss my buddy at the front of the boat for using my rod, backlashing it, and not having the courtesy to at minimum tell me had done so. mad

After a minute or so of this tirade, they let me off the hook by simply reaching down and pulling out the old line. :p

I would have to put myself into the running for this award. I have never actually used a baitcasting reel on the water. Only in my parking lot...The reason I have never used it on the water is that I backlash the thing literally every other cast. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong with it. I have probably gone through 1000 yards of line that never even got wet lol laugh

I'm with Jimbo, some of my worst backlashes are from hitting my buddies line on the cast.

Mikebfishn gets his line hooked alot, haha.

My worst had to be bankfishing and hooking my buddies baseball cap and following thru with the cast into a 25mph. wind fzzzzzzzzzzzt then the dang cap comes off flying into the lake not good,by the way just dug that ol 4600c out of the closet the other day with backlash still intact, from about 4 years ago, amazing those things don't fix them selve's. well I finally cut all that old line off and greased her up.And she's ready to go again. laugh wink

I got a backlash a couple weeks ago throwing a Texas rigged lizard. Before I even realized it, the line starts untangling by itself, and moving through the eyes... I engaged the reel and landed a 6lb bass. Not too bad,

Worst one? Hard to say. I can't count the number of times I have had to cut through line like spaghetti to empty the reel. There would be no piece longer than 2 feet. THAT's a major backlash.

I like to respool after any hard backlash on mono, because it really stresses the mono at the backlash point.

I have also backlashed a spinning reel. It's more of having too much line that just jumps off of the spool when you open the bail, then you get it wrapped around the handle and under the spool and everywhere else.

I've never backlashed. About all that happens to me is sometimes the spool will over-spin and cause the line to ball up on the reel, then I have to pick at it to pull it out. Well, if you want to call that a backlash, then I guess I have once or twice.

So, Roadrunner, is that how its going to be?? Must be getting tired of me out-catching you from the back of the boat, eh? laugh :p laugh
