We're doing it again this year!

The Red River Fly Fishers and Eisenhower state park will be hosting the fly fishing event "Texoma on the Fly" on Saturday, June 20 at Eisenhower state park on the shores of Lake Texoma from 9:00 to 4:00. Activities will include fly tying, casting lessons, fishing seminars, and of course fishing the lake.

All activities are free!

We will have three presentations in the afternoon. The speakers will be:

Steve Hollensed, Orvis endorsed Lake Texoma fly fishing guide and FFF master casting instructor, - "Fly Fishing Lake Texoma"

Matt Mauck, Southcentral Region Supervisor Fisheries Division; Oklhoma Department of Wildlife Concervation, - "Migration and Location of Stripers through the Seasons on Lake Texoma"

Mark Macnamara, long time Lake Texoma fishing guide who speciallizes in lure fishing structure for Stripers (note: Mark's techniques adapt very well to fly fishing) , - "Structure Fishing for Stripers"

Casting lessons will be available in the morning from FFF Master casting instructors Steve Hollensed and Al Crise, and from FFF certified casting instructors Rex Walker and 16 yr old Taylor Walker.

We will be posting more details as the date gets closer, but we hope you can come up and join us for a day at Eisenhower state park on Lake Texoma.

For the Red River Fly Fishers,
Rex

Seconded. I went last year and had a great time. I'll definitely be there this year too.

Hello everyone, TFO has confirmed that they plan to attend again this year and will be bringing their demo rods with them.

Here's an opportunity to cast almost any rod they make in any size. So, if you want to compare how a 5 wt Pro casts compared to a 5 wt TiCr, or if you want to see how a 6 wt Axiom casts with a 6 wt line compared to how it casts with a 7 wt line, or if you want to test cast a Mini-Mag, or maybe you want compare a 2 wt rod to a 3 wt rod, here's your opportunity to test cast pretty much any rod they make.

Getting to play and compare the rods has been one of my favorite parts of the previous "Texoma on the Fly" event.

We hope you'll come up and join us at Eisenhower state park on June 20.

For the Red River Fly Fishers,
Rex

Hello everyone, TP&W just issued a press release on Texoma on the Fly. I'll see how well it copies on here.

EISENHOWER STATE PARK TO HOST TEXOMA ON THE FLY

DENISON, Texas -- Lake Texoma is known around the country as a place to catch a striped bass, or striper as they are known locally but few people experience that thrill with a fly rod in hand. If you have ever thought about catching stripers on a fly rod then come on out to the Eisenhower State Park Recreation Hall on Saturday June 20th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and learn how. Experts will be on hand to help the public learn how to tie flies, cast a fly rod, and provide tips on what fish are biting on and where. This event is offered free to the public as part of the TPWD Family Fishing Celebration. The best part of that celebration is fishing licenses are not required to fish from a bank or pier within any of the Texas State Parks and the shoreline fishing is good in the park at this time of the year.

This is the fourth year that the State Park will host the Texoma on the Fly event. From 9:00 am till noon, fly tiers will show how to tie and fish flies. Certified fly casting instructors will provide casting lessons. If you already know how to cast a fly rod, experts will help you tighten up your casts and increase distance. Casting demonstrations will be held during a hot dog lunch. Afternoon sessions will feature professional guides and biologists from Texas and Oklahoma who share their knowledge on topics such as locating striper patterns in the lake and fly fishing tips. Jeff Tomlinson from Sherman is with the Red River Fly Fishers and an organizer of the event. Jeff says when you think of fly fishing it usually conjures up images of rivers and streams of the west but what if you could experience world class fly fishing in your own backyard? and talks of the line ripping stripers of Lake Texoma. Come on out and experience this for yourself.

Eisenhower State Park is located on Lake Texoma just west of the Denison Dam. The event is hosted by the Red River Fly Fishers and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The event is free to the public and children are encouraged to attend.

For more information call Eisenhower State Park at (903) 465-1956 or check the agency web site at www.tpwd.state.tx.us or Red River Fly Fishers at www.rrff.org.

I'd love to go, but it's a little far from where I'm at. Does TPWD sponsor any events like this in South Texas?

The only fly fishing events that I am aware of that TP&W sponsors are the Texoma events in Jan and June, "Fly Fish Texas" in May at Athens, TX (this is the biggest fly fishing event in Texas), and the Expo in Austin in October. Fly fishing is small part of the Expo event, but sadly I've heard that due to budget constraints this year's Expo has been cancelled.

Those are the only TP&W events that I know of, but there are several Federation of Fly Fishers events throughout the year.

Thanks for the (disapointing)answer. I'll dig around to see if I can find a FFF event in the area.

Alamo Fly Fishers in San Antonio is a very active organization. They have monthly meetings, weekly fly tying gatherings, monthly outings, and other events like free casting classes and sponsorship of Project Healing Waters. Check out their website at http://www.alamoflyfishers.org/.
