Couple of tries later. Gloat 6/23/09 Went fishing. Tried casting the net from the kayak. Caught plenty of perch but no Shad (from the kayak). Caught Shad in a place that I found on my own, but not from the kayak.

Your net looks alil small for catching shad. normally for shad you need at least as big as legal, but realistically you need a net between 16 and 20 feet in diameter. The downside to this is you cant buy these from Walmart. I normally order mine from an out of state supplier. for windy conditions, a 16 footer is all that is managable from a kayak, but on a calm day you can make quick work out of bait catching with a 20 footer.

7 foot radius 14 foot diameter is the max legal cast net in Texas. Using the net shown above (5 foot radius) I caught 8 big (Striper Sized) Shad today on one cast. I have a 6 foot radius net that I can also throw from the kayak. But you are right the bigger the net you can throw the better. And WalMart nets aren't heavy enough either. Need a minimum of 1 lb/radius foot for Shad.

http://www.perfectcirclenetthrower.com/ I bought one of those. works well. you need no smaller than a 5' net. Texas company. Inventer/Owner lives in Austin, good people.

I would try a sabiki rig instead. Don't think you can catch Shad with a Sabiki rig. I have used them in fresh water though with some success on other species.
