I was out at Stillhouse earlier. The storms were at least 40 miles away when I was fishing.
From the minute I picked up my rod and started fishing I kept hearing this buzzing noise. I couldn't figure out what it was.
I made my last cast before heading in and the buzzing got louder. At that point I remembered several people on the forums saying that their rods were buzzing during a storm. I started reeling in to leave before something bad happened and all of the sudden my rod shocked me! It shocked me bad enough that my right arm was aching for about 30 minutes
I dropped the rod on the deck and hauled a** back to the dock.
If you ever hear a mysterious buzzing sound and there are storms anywhere near you, quit fishing and go home!

I think that's what happens right before the lightning hits you in the forehead. I was out once and had the same thing happen then I made my last cast and my line was arched up to the ski that's your sign.... It's time to drive it like you stole it...

Lightning can strike you from up to 100 miles away.
Yes when your rod starts to buzz then there is a chance of getting struck by lightning.
Good move.
Did anyone see the story on CNN about the father and son that got struck by lightning while fishing? Both survived, but the son was burnt severely and his hair was on fire. The lightning struck the fishing rod the son was fishing with and it looked like a ball of fuzz with a handle.

We got off the lake on choke about the time a storm hit. Was getting my gear out of my buddies boat and lightning struck the parking lot, struck the boat or something but it knocked the [censored] out of me. I meant ratteled my cage. I dropped my stuff and jumped in my truck and left my stuff in the parking lot till the weather cleared up.
Thanks, Billy

I've had that happen once down on Sam Rayburn. Scary stuff.
Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc'-ra-cy) - a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

Earlier this week, I had a buzzing rod on Cedar Creek. The closest storm was over 50 miles away (per GPS), but the second I felt and heard the buzzing, we were off the water as fast as my boat would move.
Very scary stuff.

The "buzzing rod" syndrome is scary stuff indeed. I have been fishing several times when this occurred.
Once at Monticello with the owner of Rainswood Marina we experienced the line arcing into the sky several times. You would make a cast and the line would stay in the air about 15' off the water until you put your rod into the water and started reeling. It was pretty spooky...
But the fish were biting like crazy!

Wow! I have heard of people talking about their rods and/or line buzzing. Static electricity. Still powerful.
