No, a River Carpsucker is not the same as a buffalo. They are both in the "Sucker" family, but they are not the same species.

Buffalo of all three Texas species ( Smallmouth, Bigmouth, and Black ) get very large, even the smallest of the three species ( Black Buffalo ) can easily break 30lbs.

River Carpsucker rarely grows larger then 5lbs.

My first thought was Smallmouth Buffalo, however when I went back and looked at it, I realized it looked like a separate species.

River Carpsucker tend to be more bronze or silvery-gold then buffalo, they have a different scale pattern, slightly different fins, and very different eyes.

Smallmouth buffalo have eyes that often appear like "Big Black marbles."

River Carpsucker on the other hand, have very defined pupils that look a little bit like "Goat's eyes." The fish above definitely has those eyes.

It's hard to tell the coloration of the fish since it's a flash photo shot at night, but it looks fairly bronze, and the pec fins and scale pattern look to be River Carpsucker as well.

No problem! If you do a Google Images search for the two fish, you can spot the differences.

I have a picture of my friend with a River Carpsucker he caught not far from the one in the first post, but I can't find the picture.

Was that a paid fishing dock? I've been looking for a cooler place to fish.
