I've been catching bream inside of boatstalls. This is in a deep, clear-water lake with very little other cover. Yesterday, they ate pieces of night crawlers under a cork, but wouldn't touch cutbait from a small sunfish after I ran out of worms. I have small artificial baits to use in open water, but I also need an artificial to work under a float inside the boathouses. Do you know of an artificial that will work under a cork, i.e. without any movement like in open water.

The only substitute for live bait is live bait.

Jigs? Flies?

You always have the option of vertical movement, at least, right?

Yes, I do have the option for vertical movement. The water is very clear, so the gills get a good look at a bait before they take it. Next trip I'll try a few flies and jigs, but thought I'd ask in case anyone has found an artificial that works exceptionally well under these circumstances.

Canino, someone told me the Gulp products are no good for gills. Have you caught fish with them?

I have caught fish with the fry, but it was in a farm pond so I can't say whether they would work on "wild" fish.

But they did bite them, no problems. Just a little shake gives that straight tail some good action and they pounce on it.

I've caught plenty on the Gulp earthworms and Gulp white maggots. However, you have to treat it like an artificial bait, not a live bait. There will be times when they won't touch it, other times they'll bite it for a while and then stop and occasionally they'll bite it all day. If you keep them closed properly they'll last a long time. I use them as a backup in case I run out of a primary bait or sometimes as a change of pace bait on a slow day.

I remember years ago when I would drop a tiny black fly in still water and they would take it. I have some flies in the boat to try later this week. If they won't take the flies, I'll try some the Gulp. The "Foodsource" cited above might be another option; I've never heard of it. Might also use some balled up pieces of bread. Hopefully, something will work when I run out of live bait, i.e. worms. When they are biting and I run out of bait, it's a real bummer.

I have been using the gulp worms and they have been working ok for me. The bite has been slow on everything, so they may pick up later on the worms. Worth a try.

Thanks for sharing this with me LKTTU. When two or three folks report something working, it's worth a try.

gcf, also try slivers of honey-baked ham lunchmeat; no joke!

Also try a single kernal of sweetcorn on a small (12 or 10) hook.

gcf i dont bream fish that much but i found if you put a small piece of worm about1/8 of an inceh ( which i cut with scissors ) anyway that better than using a medium to big piece of worm where i fish .you might try that and that way you wont run out of bait .just saying'
