I have heard several people talking about using fishing line to get a hook out. How does this work and can you explain? My partner and I were prefishing Friday for Cypress and he got a crankbait hook stuck in his hand after he caught the fish. He tried his hardest to get it out but it was brutal and did not work by just trying to push it through. I would like to know if this line trick works so maybe I can prepared for next time. The string yank will work.

I poked the hook through the skin and cut the barb and pulled it back out.

It will work. I can't say it's any more fun than pushing the barb through and cutting the hook though.

I keep hoping one of my fishing partners will get a hook stuck in them so i can try the string thing. Has anyone ever tried just jerking it out with pliars.

Only if you want a lot of tissue damage and possible even nerve damage!!!

I have done the line trick a couple of times now, and I can absolutely say there isn't anything better for getting the hook out of soft tissue.


It doesn't hurt anymore than the hook being buried in the first place, and will not pull a chunk of meat out if done correctly.

I leave them in. It causes me to pay attention to light bites better.
Just kidding, wrap a small nylon string around it and yank. Easy and painless. No big deal.
FYI: A 5/0 or 6/0 jig hook in the thumb dug into bone requires a larger rope!

Pull real hard yell and knock the piss out of your partner works for me every time LOL!!!

Just cut the line and it will eventually rust out. Just be sure to get a tetanus booster.

I have used the string-push on the eye-yank technique on two dogs and it worked. The time it failed me, the treble was in my ear lobe. We fished for a few hours and finally my Grandfather tried to push it all the way trough. This made it worse and I had to go to the hospital. The new technique the doctor used (unsuccessfully) was to stick a needle it the entry hole and pull the skin back over the barb and presto... she ended up having to cut it out for $150.

I want to add.
Don't pull a treble hook out without first taking the other hook off your bait or you might be removing two hooks!
Sunk a treble hook in my thumb while fishing alone on Ft Gibson last year. First really buried hook in 30 yrs of fishing.
Used the string techinque and it worked great.
Had the devil of a time getting the second hook of the crankbait before removing the hook from my thumb.
