Since your Dad is a painter ... I recommend Awlgrip rather than any clearcoat for durability even though Awlgrip also has a clearcoat. The main difference I have heard from car painters is that with Awlgrip, the tack-coat is critical. You must follow the directions to the letter in both mixing (including the 15 minutes for catalyzation) and application. The tack coat is a light one that must flash before application of the cover coat. He'll know what that means. Good luck!

HD has up to 600 grit. You might need to go to an auto parts store to get a higher number. Wal Mart has the assortment up to 800 but it also has lower than you need.
