Guide trips are all different. To some people, they judge the success of a trip strictly on the fish count. Others on what they've learned. And still others on how much they enjoyed the overall trip; all things considered. I personally think a trip is successful if my customers go home happy. Right now I'm averaging about 5 trips a week and there's not a one of them that I don't give it 100% in finding and catching crappie. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. Guides have bad days just like everyone else. But Ernest is right....don't judge yourself on your ability to 'keep up' with the guide on the catching part. Great post. 2 up.
Keep on fishing.

Great Post Ernest. I expect to have a good time because when it comes down to it that is what matters most. I do set a high standard for myself if I am on a guide trip but yes it does not always work out as good as I would like. Knowing that my clients do go home with a lot more than just the catch they had does help because they do learn a bunch to help them improve their production on their own. I have been fishing for crappie for over 40 years and yet they can still get me scratching my head tring to figure them out at times. Weather and lake conditions plays a huge roll with crappie through out the year and spring can be real pain with the weather. I have fished for for most every type of fish in the southern states through the years and trust me crappie can is one of the most challanging fish to catch but the most rewarding too.
If I am just out fishing by myself or with friends the totals make no difference to me. I am just out for fun and to relax.
For those that are just learning or just having a hard time figuring out the crappie patterns. It will all come in time. Time on the water and learning how to prepare those honey holes will make you a better crappie fisherman or fisherwomen. Take in and learn as much as you can each time out but do it with no pressure on yourself to bring in big numbers because that will take the fun and relaxation away from it. That you don't want.

Agree with these posts. I am fairly new to Crappie fishing. A good day is when I learn something (almost every trip) and catch a few for dinner. Reading this forum helps me, but I need to take a guide trip to learn how to use the electronics and locate fish. Crappie fishing is as challenging to me as fly fishing and just as satifying or more. Hopefully next year for the spawn I'll know enough to try them with a fly rod too. Although I enjoy jigging and fishing docks like you guys describe.

I except to limit with all my folks everyday (I really do) anything else is just a disappointment.
I normally go out to catch the easy fish - tons of those (Hybrids / Striper, and White Bass) and for some customers we turn to the Crappie and then I expect to do really good on those too bunches as well),
I really do not to expect to limit every day on all three (with the triple crown) Hybrids, White Bass and the Crappie but if I have the right customers that is exactly what we shot for.
If I got the right folks to fish with - Sometimes it just happens. Set your mark of success High - Else you will not achieve what you are looking for.
Everyone move towards your most prominent thought think and work towards total success.

I feel as if we are all a bunch of ADD victims that would most definentily trade every body with a limit and still time to filet them all with out being to tired is our standard but in the meantime we will all settle for fishing all day in whatever conditions just to say at the end we did learn something and I always do whatever it is. I have way respect for any quide because they do not make near enough money for what they do for there customers. I love to fish but my hat is off to you quys that can do it day after day. Fishing is the one and only thing in my life that I actually have a small amount of patience for. I have fished my entire life for whatever i could catch. Heck I used to snag carp in the creek with weighted trebles. Now that I have gotten to fish a few tournaments the last couple years I at least have finally come to one definite conclusion. There are some really good crappie Anglers on this forum along with cat or both. They typically look for me at the bottom of the board.
