It is basic biology. Snakes, 'gators, along with other reptiles, AND along with FISH are not able to regulate their body temp the same way a mammal does. Mammals are able to maintain body temp via food consumption,(last time I read about it, it takes 85% of caloric intake soley for temp. regulation in a mammal) whereas so called "cold blooded" creatures rely more upon the environment (the Sun) to help regulate body temp./physical activity. When the weather gets warmer, they "turn on" and do their thing until it gets cold again. Actually, some mammals essentially do the same thing, conserve energy until food is abundant again.
They are looking for a human killing black bear in Tennessee as I write this. I'm sure it is out of hibernation, and attempting to put on enough weight while he can, so it can survive next winter. It killed a six year old girl, and darn near killed her mother and young brother. My prayers go out to those folks.
Apparently, the warmer weather has gotten some other folks around here fired up too.

Who are you to tell someone they can't kill a snake; an endeavor, that may I remind you, is perfectly legal in Texas. I agree that snakes have their place BUT, cottonmouths are very dangerous and the area my 5 year old son plays and fishes is cottonmouth eradication area to say it nicely. I shoot everyone I see with a 20 Ga shotgun. You threatening to whip people or what ever you intended in your statement above makes me believe that you are probably still in High School. Are you?

Every year at this time the snakes move through my yard going for the creek at the back of my property and I find them stretched out in the sun on the way through. Every July-August I find them back in my yard when the creek is dried up, they come back and live in my flower gardens. I have a snake catcher tool and when they get too close or I find them trying to eat the birds out of the nest I relocate them from my yard to a creek away from my house. Usually if I don't bother them, they don't bother me. However, the meaner snakes are the harmless ones, members of the rat snake family. Sometimes I do have to kill one and I really don't like to, but as others have said, when they threaten the area my Granddaughter plays in then it's fair game. The wasps are valuable to nature too, but when I find a nest 6" plus across, I shoot them down. All of nature's creatures are valuable, however we do have to be realistic sometimes when we have them in a place that threatens the little one's safety.

That's one of the privelages of being a free person And those of who think that killing a snake is going to protect your little ones. That is a short term solution at best. A better option that has a lasting effect and is better for everyone is to educate those ankle biters.

It might be informative to consider auto fatality statistics versus death by water snake. The grandkids are in incomparably more danger while being driven to the lake.
The only good car is a dead car.

A 22 caliber loaded with ratshot makes a perfect solution to any snake problem.

A 4-foot moccassin decided to stalk my wife' litle poodle while she was gardening in our fenced=in back yard an hour ago. Any reptile enthusiasts who want to pet it will find it out in the street. The head is still there, next to the carcass. After working as a Florida wildlife lieutenant for a few years, I can tell a moc from a rat snake. BUT, either one that decides to invade MY territory is dead as quick as I can grab a garden hoe. If that bothers you, why are you on TFF? We have a few members who actually kill a fish now and then, even if the only thing being threatened is a spinnerbait in the weeds. ROSS

I bet a 12" coral snake would make a great soft jerkbait. (oops, sorry PETA) the only good treehugger is a dead treehugger.

Yeah, I'd like to see ya get mad and try to do something because I killed a freakin snake. Good grief!!!!! You'd probably go ballistic if ya seen me killin one while wearing my snakeskin boots with matching belt and buckle. Like there aint enough of em to go around! You people crack me up. You from PETA or Kalifornia? You can love em all ya want, along with whatever other cause you have, I could care less. Just don't come on here and start talkin schoolyard smack cause someone doesn't love em too. One thing to try to educate, another to threaten.

Lakes would be nice places . . . if it wasn't for all these pesky aquatic creatures living in them.
The only good lake is a dead lake.
