Any rod works, I caught a 7lb bass on one of these when I was 12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Fh_YwAnv7w

Gander Mountain has the new Berkeley Amp for $29.00. Dang, talk about a nice rod at a good price. I know, good prices and GM usually don't go together, but in this case, these are great rods for the price!

You can land a fish with almost any rod - even a broom stick! One rod I bought ($10.00 at a garage sale) is a 7'0" 2 piece Rhino rod. I made a rod case from pvc and put a lock on it and traveled to Alaska by air to fish for King Salmon. The rod did a good job and is my "travel rod". The attendant checking baggage when leaving Anchorage remarked I had a $20.00 lock protecting a $10.00 rod! Its not the best rod I have but from time to time fills my need for a heavy duty travel rod. A better rod might cast easier but I'd bet on not breaking this Rhino, a consideration when far from home and stores.

My absolute favorite rods are the Tournament Choice 7' yellow rods from Academy, and they are $12 each!
Those rods are fantastic.

I can't seem to spend over 100/rod&reel... I am using a Garcia Black Max combo that were on sale for 50.00 and it is my go to r/r right now... Its the only thing that wont backlash and feels like a great fit for the price!! I was able to clean the old grease out and add new to prevent the anti reverse slipping (per a thread on here)...
Walmart carries an abu garcia rod I believe!!
Good luck!

Back on topic... while shark fishing at he end of the Caldwell Pier in Port A, I watched a feller with one of those big yellow 12 ft. rods and yellow reel from Walmart hook a nice sized shark. The shark had nearly spooled him when the reel broke loose from it's base. The reel then proceeded to take out every eye on the rod and then disappeared into the darkness. The funniest part was the look on the guy's face as he stood there holding a long yellow stick. I died laughing. But then I felt bad for him and loaned him one of my rigs.
So, does a $40 WM rig work??? Depends on what ya' catch.
